Benedict Eliminated from State Amateur in Quarterfinals

Two seniors from the Wolverines' 2001-02 team which finished 17th at the NCAA Championships also played in the 2002 Women's Amateur, with Misia Lemanski (Grosse Ile, Mich./Grosse Ile HS) reaching the semifinal round and Cortney Reno (Grosse Ile, Mich./Grosse Ile HS) making the final eight.
Lemanski, the 2001 runner-up, routed Amanda Pettit of Clinton Township 6 and 5 in a quarterfinal before falling 1-up in 19 holes to Hiestand in the semifinal round. After finishing fifth in the stroke-play qualifying with a 75, Lemanski beat Jennifer Stevens of Dearborn (5 and 4) and Jennifer Johnson of Okemos (2 and 1) in her first two matches.
Reno shot 77 in qualifying to tie for seventh and defeated Lauren Youngdahl of Jackson (6 and 5) and Andrea Brunackey of Torch River (3 and 2) before dropping a 2-up decision to Sara Boogaard of Grand Rapids in the quarterfinals.
Benedict, Lemanski and Reno will join senior-to-be Stephanie Stasik (Lubbock, Texas/Coronado HS), U-M head coach Kathy Teichert and assistant coach Sandy Wagner in the Detroit Newspapers Michigan Women's Open next week. The tournament runs Monday through Wednesday (July 15-17) at the Polo Fields Golf and Country Club in Ann Arbor. Reno was runner-up to U-M alumna Elaine Crosby in last year's event.
