"I'm excited to have Jason Murray, my first shortstop at Ball State, join me as an assistant coach at Michigan," said Maloney. "Jason is an outstanding young coach and I'm happy he was available to join our staff at Michigan."
Murray is the second coach added to the first-year staff as he joins pitching coach John Lowery under head coach Maloney.
Murray heads to Michigan after spending the 2002 season as a volunteer coach at the University of Florida under coach Pat McMahon. The Gators were 46-19 this season before losing in NCAA regional finals action.
Murray earned two letters at Ball State (1996-97) playing on Maloney's first two teams. Murray, a junior college transfer, earned All-Mid-American Conference honors as a senior shortstop when he ranked 20th in the nation with a .425 batting average. He also earned all-district honors as he hit 20 doubles and Ball State went 40-19 in 1997, the first 40-win season for the Cardinals.
Murray, who earned his B.S. degree in elementary education at Ball State in 1998, started his coaching career as an undergraduate coach at Ball State in the 1997-98 school year. He was an assistant coach at Rio Hondo College in Whittier, Calif., in 1999 and served two seasons (2000-01) as an assistant coach at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, S.C. Winthrop was 48-16-1 and played in regional action in 2001.
A native of Bluffton, Ind. (Bluffton High School, '93), Murray attended IUPU-Ft. Wayne (1994) and Lincoln Trail College (1995) before going to Ball State (1996-98).
