Ray is ranked second in the nation on the uneven bars and balance beam according to the latest GymInfo national rankings (Feb. 25). She has won five bars and five beam titles in just nine meets this season and has placed first or second on uneven bars in eight of the nine meets this season.
With her all-around total of 39.650 against the Utes, Ray moved into a tie for fifth (Wendy Marshall, 1993-96) on the U-M career list for most all-around scores of 39.000 or higher with 14. Her total came in just the 16th meet in which she has competed in the all-around.
Ray has totaled 15 titles in 32 events (47 percent) this season and has placed among the top three 23 times (72 percent). Her most successful event in collegiate competition has been the balance beam, on which she has won 10 event titles in less than two seasons. Overall, she has totaled 32 first-place finishes in 95 events (34 percent) at U-M.
This is the second time this season and third time in her career that Ray, the 2001 NCAA all-around co-champion and captain of the 2000 U.S. Olympic women's gymnastics team, has been named the conference gymnast of the week.
This is the fifth time in eight weeks a Michigan gymnasts has won the weekly conference award. Sophomore Calli Ryals (Elyria, Ohio/Midview HS) became the first U-M athlete to be named the Big Ten gymnast of the week three consecutive times when she was selected for the honor on Jan. 23, Jan. 30 and Feb. 6.
Third-ranked Michigan (12-2, 3-0 Big Ten) takes its eight-meet winning streak to Los Angeles, Calif., for the UCLA Invitational at 2 p.m. PST on Sunday (March 3) in Pauley Pavilion. The meet, which features three top-10 teams, includes No. 6 UCLA, No. 9 Minnesota and California State-Fullerton.
