PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- Sophomore Jason Coben (Newtown Square, Pa./Marple Newtown HS), a member of the University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team, was named Big Ten Conference Diver of the Week on Tuesday morning (Feb. 12) after posting wins on the one- and three-meter springboards against Michigan State on Saturday (Feb. 9).
With Dick Kimball coaching in his final dual meet after 43 years at the helm of the Michigan diving program, Coben made sure not to disappoint his coach. Coben posted an NCAA zone qualifying mark of 335.10 in the one-meter competition before adding another zone qualifying mark on the three-meter board with a score of 336.67. The sweep by Coben against Michigan State is his sixth of the season; he also won both events against Eastern Michigan (Oct. 27), Indiana (Nov. 2), Georgia (Nov. 3), Stanford (Jan. 12) and Penn State/Purdue (Jan. 19).
The honor is the second of the year for Coben as he also earned the distinction on Jan. 21 after his sweep against Penn State and Purdue.
The Wolverines have earned four Big Ten Athlete of the Week honors this season. Along with Coben's two awards in diving, sophomore Dan Ketchum (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore HS) and junior Garrett Mangieri (Closter, N.J./Mercersburg Academy, Pa.) have been recognized for their accomplishments in the pool.
No. 10-ranked Michigan will not compete again until Thursday, Feb. 28, when it opens competition at the Big Ten Championships in Bloomington, Ind.
