ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Behind the combined efforts of junior captain Mike White (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) and freshman goalkeeper Peter Dzubay (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview HS), the University of Michigan men's soccer team defeated visiting Bowling Green State 2-0 Wednesday evening (Oct. 9) on Elbel Field. It marked the first time in three meetings the Wolverines (4-5-1) have beaten Bowling Green.

White, who had moved into the Bowling Green box on the Wolverines' prior possession, found open space six yards away from the goal with his back to the net, and Cameron reacted to Turpin's steal with a full sprint at the net to Turpin's left. Three steps into the 18-yard box, Turpin fired a through ball up the center of the box. White one-touched the ball over to Cameron, which pulled the Falcon goalkeeper off his line. Cameron realized the keeper's mistake and placed the ball into the upper right corner of the net for his seventh goal of the season.
Ryan Sterba (Westlake, Ohio/St. Ignatius HS) nearly gave U-M a 2-0 lead at 24:14 when he sent a laser at the net from 20 yards out. BGSU's keeper was up to the challenge, however, and corralled one of his nine saves of the game.
Michigan had another dangerous play at the end of the first half when junior transfer Jrgen Schmieder (Regensburg, Bavaria/Stifland Gymnasium) lifted the ball over the Falcon defense to a streaking Kevin Robinson (Caro, Mich./Faith Baptist HS). With the ball in the air Robinson snuck behind the last defender and received the ball 35 yards out with less the 10 seconds to go in the half. Robinson dribbled to the top of the 18-yard box, where the Falcon keeper read Robinson's deke to the left and smothered the ball as time expired.
Michigan continued its offensive pressure in the second half as the Wolverines recorded 15 shots in the second 45 minutes of action. The Maize and Blue's tenacious offensive attack earned the Wolverines their second penalty kick of the season at 59:40 when freshman midfielder Adam Bruh (Roselyn Heights, M.Y./Wheatley HS) was pulled down in BG's box.
Cameron took the penalty kick for the Wolverines. He had already converted one PK on the season when he knocked in the 10-yard kick against Brown to send the game into overtime in a 3-3, double-OT tie on Sept. 13. When Cameron struck the ball the Falcon keeper leapt to his left and knocked the ball straight into the air to preserve the one-goal deficit.
White, however, gave the Wolverines the two-goal lead at 79:15 when he took advantage of another Falcon turnover deep in their zone. After Michigan's fifth corner of the match was cleared from the box, Bowling Green tried to change the direction of its counterattack and passed the ball across the mouth of its box. Turpin pressured the BGSU defender who was to receive the ball and forced the defender to tip it further than he wanted to.
The ball squirted across to White, who was stood 17 yards out with a clear line of sight at an open net. Due to the tipped pass Bowling Green's keeper was pulled off his line, which opened the left side of the goal, and White blasted the ball into the opening and gave the Wolverines a 2-0 advantage.
Dzubay made his second career start and earned his first shutout with two saves in 90 minutes.
Michigan returns to action this Sunday (Oct. 13) when the Wolverines play host to Big Ten rival Michigan State at 2 p.m. on the U-M Soccer Field.

Q U O T E S
U-M Head Coach Steve Burns
On the game ... "It was pretty much what we expected. We created many opportunities that we were not able to finish but we still pulled out the victory. It was a good result in the fact that we carried most of the play and created quite a few chances. Give credit to our defense to keep on with the shutout."
On how it feels to finally win against Bowling Green ... "It feels good. The monkey is off of our back. This could be the last game on Elbel Field because we may not be playing here next year. It was nice to say goodbye in this fashion."
On the team's confidence level ... "I think it helps everyone. It was not an especially pretty game. I do not think there were a lot of players on our team that felt real satisfied with this win. We are looking for a satisfying win, but any win we get right now is a satisfying one in terms of where we are and where we are going. Confidence-wise this great for us as we head into the Michigan State game."
On the play of goalkeeper Peter Dzubay ... "He looked solid in there. Joe (Zawacki) is looking solid as well and he is making the routine look routine. We want to give an opportunity for Dzubay to see if he can do the same and we felt this was going to be a good game for it."
Freshman Goalkeeper Peter Dzubay
On how he felt in net ... "My defense made it easy for me. We got the job done. I have a lot of confidence in the team and they carry that over to me. I am not nervous when I go out there at all. They prepare us well in practice."
