BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- For the second straight meeting it took extra time to decide the winner between the University of Michigan men's soccer team and Indiana, and for the second straight game the Hoosiers netted the game-winner. Vijay Dias scored at 98:22 to lift No. 4-ranked Indiana over Michigan 2-1 Sunday afternoon (Oct. 6) at Armstrong Stadium.

Indiana (8-1-2, 3-0 Big Ten) put the first goal on the board at 28:04 when Ned Grabavoy sent a free kick past a screened Joe Zawacki (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) from the just outside the 18-yard box, giving IU a 1-0 lead.
Sophomore forward Mychal Turpin (Pontiac, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit) evened the match at 1-1 when he took advantage of a Hoosier turnover deep in the IU zone and scored at 40:25. Turpin took the possession of the ball just outside the 18-yard box, dribbled around one defender and shot the ball through the legs of a second charging Hoosier. Because the ball went through the legs of the defender the goalkeeper was unable to get a view of the ball until it was in the back of the net.
The goal gave the Wolverines a boost of confidence as they entered halftime tied with the No. 4-ranked team in the nation. That confidence showed in the second half as the Maize and Blue defense kept the Hoosiers off the board and the offense mounted counterattacks resulting in a late chance to win the game.
With less than five minutes remaining in the regulation, Michigan was awarded a free kick from 45 yards out. Freshman Adam Bruh (Roselyn Heights, N.Y./Wheatley HS) sent the ball into the Hoosier 18-yard box to fellow New Yorker Knox Cameron (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman HS). Cameron settled the ball and back-flipped it to junior defender Kevin Taylor (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep). Taylor had an open look at the net from 14 yards out but put too much leg into the ball, sailing it over top of net.
Zawacki, Michigan's man between the pipes, turned away a 10 shots, six in the second half, and tied the program record for saves in a game. Zawacki shares the honor with Bryan Lau (2001), who made 10 saves in the Wolverines' 1-0 victory at Wisconsin in the first round of the 2001 Big Ten Tournament (Nov. 8).
The Wolverines return home for a pair of matches this week. Michigan plays host to Bowling Green State at 7 p.m. Wednesday (Oct. 9) on Elbel Field and welcomes intrastate and Big Ten rival Michigan State for a 2 p.m. kickoff Sunday (Oct. 13) on the U-M Soccer Field.

U-M Head Coach Steve Burns
On the game ... "We put ourselves into great possession to win the game, we just couldn't finish it. Indiana is a top-five team who has been there before and they had the tools and experience to pull it out. We have to remember that we're still getting the pieces to the puzzle, but it feels good to know that we are knocking on the door to success. Tactically we figured out our strength is playing off the counterattack. We had a number of chances today. Mychal Turpin converted one of those chances and we nearly had another late in the game."
On the importance of Mychal Turpin's goal ... "That was a huge goal for us. It sent us into halftime tied at 1-1 and showed our players that we can play with the top teams in the nation. It helped our players realize that there is no mystique about playing Indiana in Bloomington. It gave a boost of confidence that we played with for the rest of the match."
On the team ... "We have been training well all season and it is just a matter of time before we can put everything we learn in training toward winning a game of this caliber."
On the overtime ... "The players were focused heading into the overtime period. We were playing into a stiff breeze so our plan was to play for the second half. We came out in the overtime period and played what we call bunker ball. We tried to sneak the ball into their zone and play hard to try and win corners without giving them a clean run at (Joe) Zawacki. We almost got to that second overtime period, we were just two steps short."
On Michigan ... "Teams know who we are now. We almost knocked off Penn State earlier this year and we had our chances here today. We have played the most difficult portion of our schedule in the first half of the season. Now we are looking at putting a few wins together heading into the Big Ten Tournament. If we can just finish our opportunities we can do some damage the rest of the way."

Mychal Turpin's goal at 40:25 was the first Michigan goal scored against Indiana in the four-game series between the two schools.
Turpin scored his team-leading eighth goal of season, increasing his U-M single-season record lead to two goals over Knox Cameron, who has six goals in 2002.
Following a freshman season in which he scored three goals, Turpin now has 11 career tallies, tying Cameron as the program's career goal-scoring leader.
This marks the second consecutive game that Michigan and Indiana have battled into extra minutes. In a semifinal matchup at 2001 Big Ten Tournament (Nov. 9), the Wolverines forced the Hoosiers into triple overtime before losing 1-0.
Joe Zawacki tied a program record for saves in a game with 10 stops against the Hoosiers. Bryan Lau posted 10 saves in the Wolverines' only postseason victory, at Wisconsin in the first round of the 2001 Big Ten Tournament (Nov. 8).
