EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team rallied from a one-goal deficit to tie Michigan State 1-1 in double overtime this afternoon (Friday, Oct. 25) at Old College Field. Freshman forward Therese Heaton (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South HS) scored in the 87th minute to help the No. 21 Wolverines (12-4-1, 7-2-1 Big Ten) to their first tie of the season. Both teams fought for attempts to win the game in overtime, but strong performances from the defenses kept the score equal.
The Maize and Blue rallied with only four minutes remaining to tie the game 1-1 on a cold and rainy afternoon. Heaton headed in a cross at the center of the six-yard box at the 3:29 mark on a pass from senior forward Abby Crumpton (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS). Crumpton possessed the ball in the left corner after it was flighted over the Spartan defense from half field.
Michigan State scored with 14:45 remaining on the clock on a long cross from Amy Allen. The ball skipped over the Michigan defense right to Michelle Perun. Perun took the ball in stride and redirected the cross on goal. The ball found the inside of the side post and rolled into the net.
The Wolverines managed to send 10 shots toward the net in the first half, creating a handful of scoring opportunities. In the 33rd minute forwards Heaton and Kate Morgan (San Jose, Calif./Archbishop Mitty HS) combined for an open shot on net. Heaton pushed the ball across the top of the 18-yard box to Morgan, who took one touch and passed the ball back across to a wide-open Heaton. The freshman forward launched a shot on net from 12 yards out but over the crossbar.
Michigan came close again with four minutes remaining in the half. Morgan sent Crumpton alone on net with a through ball. Crumpton pushed the ball out of the reach of the Spartans' oncoming goalkeeper to the corner of the penalty area before sending a cross to the back post. Sophomore Liz Dosa (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont HS) was the first to the ball and knocked it toward the goal, but her shot was blocked by a MSU defender and cleared.
Amy Sullivant (Utica, Mich./Eisenhower HS) got the Maize and Blue going in a wide-open second half with a run out of the back. Sullivant crossed the ball into the right corner to Michele Pesiri (New Hyde Park, N.Y./Sacred Heart HS), who sent it back into the middle. Crumpton got a head on the ball, directing it just right of the net.
Michigan goalkeeper Suzie Grech (Narberth, Pa./The Shipley School) made eight saves, none more important than her block nine minutes before the game's first goal. Michigan State took a shot on goal, but Grech laid out and tipped the ball wide off of her fingertips.
The Maize and Blue will honor its senior class prior to Sunday's (Oct. 27) game against Oakland at the U-M Soccer Field. Game time is set for 1 p.m. and the seniors will be honored 10 minutes prior to the start of the game.
