ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior defenders Andrea Kayal (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills HS) and Amy Sullivant (Utica, Mich./Eisenhower HS) made sure the University of Michigan women's soccer team would earn a win on its Senior Day on Sunday (Oct. 27), helping the No. 21 Wolverines shut out Oakland 2-0 at U-M Soccer Field. Kayal's two second-half goals, her fourth and fifth on the season, were enough to best the Golden Grizzlies. Junior goalkeeper Suzie Grech (Narberth, Pa./The Shipley School) notched her seventh shutout of the season with four saves in the contest.
Kayal scored the game-winner, the seventh of her career, on a header in the 69th minute. On a quick restart, Sullivant passed the ball down the right sideline to wide-open freshman forward Colleen McAndrews (St. Charles, Ill./East HS). McAndrews beat one oncoming defender in the corner and sent the ball across the net, finding the head of Kayal inside the six-yard box.
Grech came up big on Oakland's best chance of the afternoon, as she was forced to dive to her left side in order to deflect a shot by Kristi Swaving over the crossbar with 20 minutes remaining in the game, keeping the 1-0 Wolverine lead intact.
Michigan's second goal was built out of a great individual effort from Sullivant. Moving the ball down the left side of the field, Sullivant beat two defenders and drew a holding foul at midfield. Sullivant sent her free kick to the far post, where Kayal was able to separate herself from the defense and redirect the ball into the net on a header at 75:48.
The Wolverines take on regional rival Kentucky next Friday (Nov. 1) in their final regular-season game. Michigan will travel to Lexington, Ky., for the 7:30 p.m. contest.

QUOTES
Michigan Head Coach Debbie Rademacher
On using the win as momentum going into the postseason ... "We have to beat Kentucky. They are an in-region, tough opponent every year. This is good to get a win under our belt in our last home game. It was a big Senior Day and an emotional day. I was happy with the way we played. I did not know how we were going to get those goals, so we will take them any way we can get them. They were really nice goals. Kentucky will be tough and that is a huge game for us."
On playing Amy Sullivant at midfield ... "They were marking Abby (Crumpton) so tight and Amy has a weapon in her shot. We thought we needed to add more physical pressure up front and we have some injuries to players that we usually have out there. She is a weapon that we know that we can play at other places and thought she would help us generate offense."
On what the team did well and what they need to work on ... "I thought defensively we played really well. I thought we possessed the ball side-to-side through the midfield. We just had a hard time getting in behind them and getting shots off. They were playing tough on Abby (Crumpton). They are very aggressive and very physical in the back. We needed to get that final pass, the killer pass, in order to get a better shot on goal. I thought that was tough for us today."
On what the team needs to improve on ... "We need to find better ways to get more dangerous shots on goal."
On Andrea Kayal ... "In senior introductions, her introduction was that she comes up big in big games. Out of her eight goals in her career, six of them have been game-winners. And then today she added a couple so now 10 goals in her whole career and seven of them are game-winners. Obviously she is a big-game player. She did that for us against Penn State and she did that for us against Ohio State. It is really big."
