MADISON, Wis. -- Sophomore midfielder Jeff Mirmelstein's (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence Central HS) first career goal, with under eight minutes to play, lifted the University of Michigan men's soccer team to a 3-2 win over Wisconsin Sunday afternoon (Oct. 20) at the McClimon Soccer Complex.
| Mirmelstein's first career goal came in the eighth game of his Michigan career. |
Cameron gave the Maize and Blue an early 1-0 advantage when he scored his eighth goal of season at 7:10. Mirmelstein began the play after the ball went out of bounds off a Badger defender. Mirmelstein threw in the ball to junior defender Kevin Taylor (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep), who served the ball into Cameron inside the six-yard box. When the ball was in the air, Wisconsin's goalkeeper Eric Hanson came off his line to challenge Cameron, but the Wolverine sophomore was able to settle the ball to his feet and fire a shot into the back of the net.
The Wolverines (5-6-1, 1-3 Big Ten) maintained their 1-0 lead throughout the first half although they had three other shots on goal in the first 45 minutes of action.
Michigan went up 2-0 at 59:27 when Mychal Turpin (Pontiac, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit) slotted the ball through the goal mouth to White for an empty-netter. Turpin received the ball along the left side of the 18-yard box and carried it to the end line. As Turpin turned toward the goal the Wisconsin keeper committed to the inside post. With the far post abandoned, White charged toward the open space in front of net. Turpin saw the run develop and sent the ball through the box to White, who finished the play for his fifth goal of the season.
After a pair of Wisconsin tallies tied the game at 2-2, Turpin was awarded his second assist of the match. Turpin found room in the Badger 18-yard box and fired a shot at the goalkeeper. Hanson made the save but the ball deflected high in the air and stayed in play out in front of the goal. Mirmelstein leaped in the air and got his head on the ball to beat the keeper and give Michigan a 3-2 lead at 82:13.
The Wolverines return to action next Friday (Oct. 25) for a 3 p.m. CDT matchup with Illinois-Chicago on Flame Field in Chicago, Ill.

Q U O T E S
U-M Head Coach Steve Burns
On the victory ... "This is the kind of win this program needs at this point in the season. The timing of this win is great for us. We sorted out the psyche of this team in that we came into this game not afraid to lose. They took the challenge of the match and went out there and got the win. We are not shaken by our record and we will continue to play hard for the rest of the season."
On the game ... "It was a wide-open game. To Wisconsin's credit they are a young team who is looking to come at you and play tough, physical soccer. I didn't like the fact that it was unorganized. It was a great game to watch as a spectator, but as a coach I would have liked to see our guys play a little more within the system."
On Mychal Turpin ... "Mychal continues to play well in big games for us. He contributed to our last two goals and set up Jeff's (Mirmelstein) game-winner with a hard shot on net."
On Peter Dzubay ... "He played well for us today. The team has great confidence in his abilities and that helps boost his confidence. He is certainly a good goalkeeper."
