BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team earned its fifth shutout of the season with a 2-0 victory over Indiana on Sunday (Oct. 13). Freshman forward Therese Heaton (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South HS) helped the ninth-ranked Wolverines (11-3, 6-2 Big Ten) avoid their first two-game losing streak of the season with the game-winning goal at 56:30.
Heaton's goal, her sixth of the season, came after a scoreless first half in which the Wolverines possessed the majority of the play but were unable to find the net with three shots. Starting a counterattack following Indiana pressure in Michigan's zone, the Wolverine defense located senior forward Abby Crumpton (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) across midfield. Crumpton made a long run deep into Hoosier territory with the ball at her feet before sending a pass across the goal box to Heaton. The freshman forward earned her third game-winning goal of the season, putting the ball away 10 minutes into the new half.
Michigan struck again in the 71st minute to gain a two-goal cushion. With the ball outside the IU 18-yard box, sophomore forward Kate Morgan (San Jose, Calif./Archbishop Mitty HS) launched her second shot of the game toward the net. The ball ricocheted off the post right to junior forward Stephanie Chavez (Shorewood, Wis./Shorewood HS). Chavez slid the ball into the net, beating Hoosier goalkeeper Shaunna Dougherty, for her fifth tally of the season.
Indiana managed seven shots in the game to Michigan's eight attempts, but junior goalkeeper Suzie Grech (Narberth, Pa./The Shipley School) stopped everything that came her way, making two saves to earn the win. IU's best chance to score came early in the contest when freshman Kristen Zmijewski intercepted Grech's clearance and went at goal one-on-one with Grech. Michigan's keeper erased her mistake, however, with a good save.
The Maize and Blue return to the friendly confines of U-M Soccer Field, where it is undefeated this season, for a Thursday afternoon (Oct. 17) matchup against Notre Dame. Michigan hopes to earn its first win in the six-game all-time series against the Irish when action kicks off at 4 p.m.

QUOTES
Michigan Head Coach Debbie Rademacher
On the game ... "It was tied 0-0 at halftime, but we really turned it on in the second half. Abby (Crumpton) did some great work on the counterattack to set up Therese's (Heaton) goal that put us up. There weren't a lot of dangerous shots for either team, but we managed to put our chances away. It was weird, though, there just didn't seem to be tons of shots for either side."
On coming out hard after the Purdue loss ... "We needed to. I think it was good for us to come out in the first half and have a lot of the possession. We weren't necessarily that dangerous, but it gave us some confidence back and we were really able to turn it up a notch in the second half."
On the play of Kate Morgan ... "Kate's shot from far out that hit the post was one of the best of the day. She really had a good weekend all the way around and put together two strong games."
NOTES
• Therese Heaton's goal ties her for second on the team in game-winning goals with senior Andrea Kayal (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills HS). Three of Heaton's six goals this season have been game-winners.
• Abby Crumpton now has 26 career assists, tying her for second place of Michigan's all-time list with Kacy Beitel (1997-2000). Amber Berendowsky (1996-99) holds first place with 33 career helpers.
• Goalkeeper Suzie Grech moved into sole possession of second place among the Wolverines' all-time wins leaders, earning her 27th career win against Indiana. Jessica Jones (1995-98) is now in third place with 26 wins, while Carissa Stewart (1997-2000) is the program's career leader at 41. Grech is credited with all 11 of Michigan's wins this season and is one win shy of tying her career best for wins in a season (12, 2001).
• Junior defender Shannon Reid (Centerville, Ohio/Archbishop Alter HS) started her first game of the season for the injured Amy Sullivant (Utica, Mich./Eisenhower HS). Reid, who has played in 10 of Michigan's 14 games this season, now has 18 career starts for the Maize and Blue.
• Michigan has rebounded from its three losses this season to outscore its next opponents 8-1.
• The Wolverines are 8-1 all-time against the Hoosiers. Eight wins is tied for the most victories the Maize and Blue has earned against any opponent. Michigan earned its eighth win against Ohio State last weekend (Oct. 6). Michigan has seven wins against Northwestern, which it will play Oct. 20.
