ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Seven members of the University of Michigan women's gymnastics team earned National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches for Women (NACGC/W) Scholastic All-American honors for their work in the classroom during the 2000-01 school year. Three-time honorees Bridget Knaeble (New Hope, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) and Shannon MacKenzie (Midland, Mich./Midland HS) led the Wolverines' selections.
Also earning 2001 NACGC/W Scholastic All-American honors were Janessa Grieco (Mahopac, N.Y./Carmel HS), Amy Kuczera (Bloomingdale, Ill./Lake Park HS), Jodie Rosenberg (West Bloomfield, Mich./West Bloomfield HS), Alison Rudisi (Mississauga, Ontario/Loyola Catholic) and Tara Tagliarino (Tampa, Fla./H.B. Plant HS).
Five of the Wolverines' seven Scholastic All-Americans were regulars in at least one event lineup throughout the season, with two earning All-America distinction in the athletic arena as well. Grieco earned NCAA All-America First Team honors and finished third in the nation on the vault, while Knaeble received NCAA All-America Second Team honors for her efforts on the uneven bars. At the Big Ten Conference Championships, Knaeble and MacKenzie were event champions on the uneven bars and balance beam, respectively.
The group led the team to its third consecutive Big Ten and NCAA Regional championships. At the NCAA National Championships, the squad captured third, and freshman Elise Ray (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake HS) tied for the all-around title.
Michigan gymnasts have now earned 50 Scholastic All-American citations in head coach Bev Plocki's 12-year tenure. The team's Big Ten title in 2001 was its ninth in 10 years, and the top-10 national finish was the ninth straight for the Wolverines.
