COLUMBUS, Ohio -- On a dismal, rainy day, the University of Michigan women's soccer team ignored the elements and played enthusiastic soccer to record its fourth consecutive shutout victory, beating Ohio State University 4-0 Friday (Oct. 5).
The Wolverines played a solid defensive game, limiting the Buckeyes to nine shots and only four shots on goal. Michigan goaltender Suzie Grech (Narbeth, Pa./The Shipley School), who has gone 370:31 minutes without allowing a goal, made all four saves to clean up any of the debris Ohio State was able to put on net.
Michigan sophomore forward Stephanie Chavez (Shorewood, Wis./Shorewood HS) scored two goals, including her second game-winner in as many contests. Her first goal came at 33:17, putting Michigan ahead late in the first half. After dribbling the ball between two surprised defenders she kept the ball low and beat the Buckeye goalie in the lower left-hand corner of the net.
Chavez's second goal came at the 60:05 mark of the game and was this time assisted by junior forward Abby Crumpton (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS). With staunch defensive support throughout the game Chavez's second goal -- the team's third -- destroyed any Buckeye thoughts of a comeback.
Earlier in the second half, at 53:05, the Wolverines scored on an unusual play. Buckeye goalie Jen Heaney made an all-out effort to block a Maize and Blue penalty shot but was unable to regroup in time as Carly Williamson (Barrington, R.I./Barrington HS) slammed in her own rebound for her first goal of the season. Laney Rosin (Potomac, Md./Thomas S. Wooten HS) finished the scoring at 87:39 with an unassisted tally, her second goal of the season.
Michigan (6-4, 4-1 Big Ten), which has won six of its last seven games, travels to State College, Pa., for a Big Ten showdown with No. 8-ranked Penn State at 3 p.m. Sunday (Oct. 7). The Nittany Lions (7-2-1, 3-0-1 Big Ten), who blanked Michigan State 4-0 on Friday, are the defending Big Ten regular-season and tournament champions.

QUOTES
Michigan Assistant Coach Scott Forrester
On Stephanie Chavez's first goal ... "She picked up where she left off in that Wisconsin game. She made a nice move between two caught-off-guard defenders and came up with a good shot to score."
On scoring off a penalty kick rebound ... "It doesn't happen too often. Usually the keeper makes the save or it sails past the net for a defensive kick. It was a great presence of mind and focus for Carly (Williamson) to stick with it and put her own rebound in."
On the Wolverines' fourth consecutive shutout ... "We opened up with a tough group of opponents and we weren't clicking early in the season, but now that we're in conference I think we're playing more collectively. It's not just the four defenders and the goalie. It's a conscientious effort by the midfielders and forwards too. It's a total team effort."
