ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's cross country team posted a fourth-place finish at its Wolverine Interregional on Sunday morning (Oct. 14) at the U-M Golf Course. Sophomore Lindsey Gallo (Freehold, N.J./Howell HS), who has posted the fastest time on the Michigan team in all four scored meets this season, led the team with a 10th-place finish as she covered the 5,000 meters in 19:05.
As a group, the Wolverines scored 92 points to finish behind No. 8-ranked North Carolina (26), No. 14 Wisconsin (47) and Purdue (65). North Carolina sophomore Shalane Flanagan won the meet by posting a time of 17:26, which was 36 seconds faster than her closest competitor. Despite a rain-soaked course, Flanagan's time ranks her sixth among the top performers in Wolverine Interregional history.
Michigan junior Jeanne Spink (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea HS) and sophomore Rachel Sturtz (Traverse City, Mich./Central HS) also posted top-20 finishes as the duo placed 15th and 16th, respectively. Spink, who finished with a time of 19:18, has finished in the top 20 in three of the four races in which she has competed this season. Sturtz's time of 19:22 placed her in the top 20 for the second time this year, as she also accomplished the feat at the Miami Invitational (Sept. 8).
Senior Katie Ryan (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) closed out her last collegiate meet at the U-M Golf Course by finishing 24th with a time of 19:50. On the other end, two freshmen made their debuts at the Wolverine Interregional. Chelsea Loomis (Traverse City, Mich./West HS) placed 27th with a time of 19:56 and Edna Kollarits (Whitehouse, Ohio/Maumee Valley C.D.S.) placed 30th (20:06) for her best finish of the year.
Michigan's next race will be on Sunday, Oct. 28, when it will compete in the Big Ten Conference Championships in Champaign, Ill. The women's race is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. CST.

Q U O T E S
U-M Head Coach Mike McGuire
On the meet ... "It didn't help that we held out Andrea Parker but we had a fairly good race. It wasn't great. Lindsey (Gallo) went out a little too fast and she paid for it during the middle of the race. I thought she was capable of a top-five performance. Jeanne Spink has done a great job and I'm very pleased with the way she has performed and practiced all year."
On the size of the crowd ... "It is really fun for the kids to have this many people out here, especially on a day when the weather wasn't very good. It's our one traditional meet of the year and all the kids had their parents here and there was a lot of support for our team."
