SAVOY, Ill. -- The University of Michigan women's cross country team ran to a second-place finish at the Big Ten Conference Championships on Sunday (Oct. 28), taking runner-up honors for the fifth consecutive year. Sophomore Lindsey Gallo (Freehold, N.J./Howell HS), who has been the Wolverines' top finisher in all five races this year, covered the 5,000 meters of Illinois' Orange and Blue golf courses in 17:26.7 en route to a seventh-place finish.
Michigan tallied 101 points on the afternoon and trailed only No. 6-ranked Michigan State, which scored 35 points with four runners finishing in the top 10. Bethany Brewster of Wisconsin won the individual title with a time of 17:02.7 as the 14th-ranked Badgers finished third, marking the first time they have not won the team title since 1994, when Michigan was victorious.
Overall, the Maize and Blue placed four runners among the top 33, including two in the top 20. Junior Jeanne Spink (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea HS) ran her fastest time of the year (17:49.3) to place 13th, her highest finish on the year. Freshman Andrea Parker (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) and sophomore Rachel Sturtz (Traverse City, Mich./Central HS) both made their Big Ten Championships debuts, with Parker placing 31st (18:09.6) and Sturtz following in 33rd (18:13.4).
The second-place finish by Michigan continues an impressive trend for the Maize and Blue. The Wolverines have secured a top-three finish at the Big Ten championships every year since 1988, including three team titles (1992, '93, '94) and six runner-up finishes.
Michigan's next meet will be on Saturday, Nov. 10, when it competes at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional in Terre Haute, Ind. The meet will be hosted by Indiana State University, with the women's race starting at noon.
