TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The University of Michigan women's cross country team totaled 196 points on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 10) to finish in seventh place at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional at Indiana State University's LaVern Gibson Championship Course. Sophomore Lindsey Gallo (Freehold, N.J./Howell HS) was the fastest Wolverine on the 6,000-meter course with a time of 21:54.5, which earned her a 29th-place finish.
Michigan State won the team title with 58 points and Notre Dame finished second with 124. By finishing in the top two overall, the Spartans and Fighting Irish earn automatic berths into the NCAA Championships, which will be held Monday, Nov. 17, in Greenville, S.C. Michigan will have to wait and see if it is selected to the NCAA Championships as one of the 13 teams to receive at-large selections.
Junior Jeanne Spink (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea HS) made a significant contribution in her first NCAA Regional appearance as she finished 30th, with a time of 21:56.0. On the flip side of that, senior Katie Ryan (Rochester, Mich./Adams HS) competed in her last NCAA Regional and posted a time of 22:07 to finish in 30th.
The other four members of the Maize and Blue were all making their debut in NCAA Regional competition. Redshirt freshman Andrea Parker (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) and sophomore Rachel Sturtz (Traverse City, Mich./Central HS) crossed the finish line nearly simultaneously, with Parker placing 51st (22:24.1) and Sturtz taking 52nd (22.24.4). Freshman Edna Kollarits (Whitehouse, Ohio/Maumee Valley C.D.S.) posted a time of 23:29 to finish in 110th and sophomore Katie Easton (Fort Gratiot, Mich./Port Huron Northern HS) followed in 146th place at 24:14.

Q U O T E S
U-M Head Coach Mike McGuire
On his team's performance ... "It was obviously a disappointing day. We got a good race out of Jeanne Spink and Katie Ryan was pretty solid, but we just didn't come out with the same fire we had at the Big Ten Championships. It wasn't horrible, but it wasn't our best effort."
