This Week
The University of Michigan women's soccer team (4-4, 3-1 Big Ten) is on the road this week for a pair of Big Ten Conference games. The Wolverines battle Iowa on Friday (Sept. 29) at the Hawkeye Recreation Field in Iowa City, Iowa, and face Illinois on Sunday (Oct. 1) at the Illinois Soccer Field in Champaign, Ill. Michigan is on top of the Big Ten with its 3-1-0 conference record.
Scouting the Opponents
Iowa in 2000 -- Iowa (7-3-0, 1-2-0 Big Ten) is coming off a 2-1 victory over No. 20 Wake Forest (Sept. 24). The Hawkeyes scored two quick goals against Wake Forest to hand the Demon Deacons their third loss of the season. On Friday (Sept. 22), Iowa fell to Michigan State for its second Big Ten loss of the season. Leading the way for the Hawkeyes offensively are senior Kate Walse with 16 points in 10 games and junior Linzy Wolman with five goals and five assists in 10 contests. The Hawkeyes Against Michigan -- Michigan has a 3-0-0 record against Iowa dating back to 1997. In the three previous meetings with Iowa, Michigan has outscored the Hawkeyes 9-1. Michigan shut out the Hawkeyes 4-0 in 1997 and 2-0 in 1999.
Illinois in 2000 -- Illinois comes into the weekend action with a 6-3-0 overall record and a 2-1-0 record in the Big Ten. Illinois handed Michigan State its first loss on Sunday (Sept. 24) with a 2-1 victory over the Spartans. Leading the way offensively for the Fighting Illini is junior Emily Brown with five goals and two assists. Illinois has split the goaltending duties three ways throughout the season. Garnering the most minutes in net is junior Annemarie Hennes. She has played six games with a 2-2-0 record and a 1.06 goals against average. Illinois on the Internet: www.fightingillini.com.
The Fighting Illini Against Michigan -- Michigan has had great success against Illinois with a perfect 4-0-0 record. Michigan has outscored the Fighting Illini 11-5 in the past three seasons, including a 4-3 victory over the Fighting Illini in the Big Ten Conference Tournament last season. Senior Kacy Beitel (Midland, Mich./H.H. Dow HS) has scored six goals against Illinois in her career.
Last Week
Michigan suffered its first Big Ten loss of season when it fell to Wisconsin, 1-0, on Friday (Sept. 22) at home. Michigan blasted 24 shots at the Badgers but could not get one past the Wisconsin netminder. The Wolverines bounced back on Sunday (Sept. 24), defeating Minnesota 4-0 at home. Four different Michigan players scored as Kacy Beitel, Stephanie Chavez (Shorewood, Wis./Shorewood HS), Abby Crumpton (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) and Abby Tompkins (Grosse Pointe, Mich./University Liggett HS) all netted goals in the victory.
Goalie's Hat Trick
Freshman Suzie Grech (Narbeth, Pa./The Shipley School) earned her third consecutive shutout against Minnesota on Sunday (Sept. 24). Her previous shutouts came against Indiana (Sept. 17) and Missouri (Sept. 10). Grech has an .889 save percentage and a 0.73 goals against average, not allowing a goal since Sept. 3.
Accolades for Grech
Suzie Grech has collected more than just wins this season. She was named the Big Ten Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 19.
Beitel's Back
Senior Kacy Beitel scored her first goal of the season against Minnesota (Sept. 24). Beitel led the team in 1999 with 15 goals and 34 points. Leading the offense this season is sophomore Abby Crumpton with 10 points on four goals and two assists.
The Big D
The Wolverines have gone 4-1-0 in their last five contests. The key to the winning record is the defense. Michigan has allowed just two goals in the five games, outscoring its opponents 15-2.
Shutout City
Michigan is undefeated against its opponents this weekend. The Wolverines hold a 3-0-0 record against the Hawkeyes and a 4-0-0 record against the Fighting Illini.
99 Wins on the Books
Michigan head coach Debbie Belkin Rademacher has 99 wins to her coaching credit. Rademacher has 81 wins with the Wolverines (1994-2000) and 18 with the Fairfield Stags (1992-93).
Six and Counting
Kacy Beitel is just six goals away from becoming the career goal-scoring leader at the University of Michigan. Beitel has 35 goals in her career spanning 76 games. Former Michigan standout Amber Berendowsky (1996-99) holds the record with 40 goals in 83 games.
Visitors' Advantage
Michigan returns to Illinois for the first time since 1998, where the Wolverines shut out the Fighting Illini 2-0. Michigan also has outscored Iowa on its home field 7-1, including a 4-0 shutout in 1997.
On Deck
After returning from Iowa and Illinois, the Wolverines play a rare Wednesday evening game (Oct. 4) against Oakland University. Michigan then travels to East Lansing to take on rival Michigan State on Sunday (Oct. 8).
