This Week
The University of Michigan women's soccer team (1-3 overall, 0-0 Big Ten) opens its Big Ten Conference schedule with a trip to Purdue (Sept. 15) and Indiana (Sept. 17). The Wolverines defeated the Boilermakers 4-1 last season at the U-M Soccer Field in the first meeting between the teams. Michigan leads the all-time series against Indiana 5-2, including a 3-0 victory at home last season.
Wolverine Watch
After starting the season 0-3, Michigan bounced back strong against No. 12 Missouri, shutting out the Tigers 7-0 on Sept. 10. Senior captains Kacy Beitel (Midland, Mich./H.H. Dow HS) and Marie Spaccarotella (Livonia, Mich./Churchill HS) elevated their play against Missouri to get the team on track. Splitting goalkeeping duties are senior Carissa Stewart (Topsham, Maine/Mt. Ararat HS) and freshman Suzie Grech (Narbeth, Pa./The Shipley School). Leading the offense this season for the Wolverines are sophomore Abby Crumpton (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) and newcomer Amber Wilson (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West HS).
Scouting the Opponents
Purdue -- Purdue has a 5-1-0 record heading into Big Ten play. The Boilermakers' lone defeat was a 4-1 loss to No. 3 Nebraska on Sept. 10. One of Purdue's five victories was a 7-1 route of Valparaiso. In that game, six Boilermaker freshmen accounted for 14 of the team's 19 points, including two goals and one assist for five points from freshman Annette Kent. Indiana -- The Hoosiers bring a perfect 5-0-0 record into the weekend. Indiana has given up just one goal over the first five games of its season, outscoring opponents 14-1. Junior midfielder Stacey Peterson leads the way offensively for Indiana with nine points on three goals and three assists. The goaltending duties for the Hoosiers have been split between senior Chrissy Heubi and freshman Shaunna Daugherty. Heubi has 2.5 shutouts on the season and Daugherty is credited with 1.5 shutouts. Last Week
The Wolverines found their scoring touch last weekend, earning their first victory of the season. Michigan dropped its home opener Friday (Sept. 8) to Washington, 4-0. Quickly rebounding from the defeat, Michigan stomped No. 12 Missouri 7-0, scoring five of the goals in the first half. Sophomore Abby Crumpton and freshman Amber Wilson each scored two goals and had one assist in the win over Missouri. Freshman goalkeeper Suzie Grech earned her first career shutout in just her second start.
Five's the Number
The Wolverines scored five goals in the first half against Missouri (Sept. 10). The last time U-M scored at least five goals in the first half was Oct. 17, 1997, when it scored six in the opening 45 minutes against Illinois in a 9-1 victory. Last season the Wolverines scored five second-half goals in a 6-0 victory against Butler on Oct. 24, 1999.
Points Abound
Sophomore Abby Crumpton and freshman Amber Wilson each scored five points against Missouri to put them in a tie for sixth in the Michigan soccer record books for most points in a game. The last time a Wolverine scored five points in a game was Oct. 22, 1997, when former Michigan standout Amber Berendowsky scored two goals and one assist in a 6-0 win against Detroit.
Blanks
Freshman goaltender Suzie Grech became the first goaltender other than senior Carissa Stewart to earn a solo shutout since 1996, when Jessica Jones shut out Wisconsin, 0-0.
Big Ten Dominance
In the last three seasons, the Wolverines have a 20-5-3 record against their conference foes. In 1999, Michigan won the Big Ten Conference Tournament, defeating Penn State 4-2 in the final.
Reaching for Milestones
Senior Kacy Beitel is six goals away from tying Amber Berendowsky as the all-time leading career goal scorer in Michigan women's soccer history. Beitel has 34 goals in 45 games, while Berendowsky (1996-99) holds the record with 40 tallies in 83 games.
Senior Carissa Stewart needs to make three more saves to top Jessica Jones as the career saves leader for the Wolverines. Jones (1995-98) set the mark with 223 stops in 43 games. Stewart has 221 saves in 52 games.
Head coach Debbie Belkin Rademacher is four wins away from 100 career victories as Michigan's head coach. Rademacher has been the only coach in the seven-year history of Michigan women's soccer and currently has a career record of 78-45-9.
