HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- Led by seniors Mike Affeldt (Charlotte, N.C./Rochester [Mich.] Adams HS) and Michael Harris (Troy, Mich./Troy HS), the University of Michigan men's golf team held on to its lead in rainy and windy conditions Saturday (April 8) to win the Marshall Invitational at Guyan Golf and Country Club.
The Wolverines fired a final round of 301 to finish with a tournament total of 877 (288-288-301), which was good enough for their second team title on the season. Miami (Ohio) finished as the runner-up with 881 after rounds of 288-296-297. Earlier this season, the Wolverines won the Xavier Invitational (Oct. 11-12).
After the Wolverines secured an eight-stroke lead with back-to-back rounds of 288 in blustery conditions Friday (April 7), they continued to hold tight in the final round in the rain and sleet. After just three holes on Saturday, rain caused a three-hour delay. With a break in the weather, the teams went back on the course and the Wolverines pressed on, winning by four strokes.
Iowa's Matt Stutzman won the individual title with a three-round total of 214 after rounds of 70-70-74. Michigan's Affeldt, Illinois' Geoff Lound, Wisconsin's Jon Turcott and Miami's Jeff Ritchey all tied for second (217), three strokes behind Stutzman.
Senior Affeldt led the charge in the third round for the Wolverines as he moved up from a tie for 12th to finish with a career-best tie for second after firing rounds of 77-68-72 for a tournament total of 217. Fellow senior Harris continued his strong play in the poor weather conditions as he tied for sixth after rounds of 67-75-76 for a 218 tournament total.
Sophomore Andrew Chapman (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS) finished tied for 11th after shooting rounds of 72-76-72 for a 220 total. Senior/junior Scott Hayes (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester HS) finished tied for 29th (72-71-81/224) and sophomore Andy Matthews (Ada, Mich./Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central HS) finished tied for 79th (79-74-81/234).
Michigan will continue its important District IV run in Columbus, Ohio, when the Wolverines participate in the Kepler Invitational on Friday and Saturday, April 14-15, at the Kepler Golf Club. Last year, the Wolverines finished fifth of the 15 teams that participated.
