COLUMBUS, Ohio -- In another important District IV battle, the University of Michigan men's golf team continued to use consistent play and strategy down the stretch to finish tied for third in the 17-team battle at the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate (April 14-15) at Ohio State University's Scarlet Course. The Wolverines finished with rounds of 300-293-304 for a tournament total of 897 and a tie for the third position with Toledo.
Northwestern took home the tournament title by 10 strokes over host Ohio State. The Wildcats finished with a 876 total after rounds of 297-285-294, bettering the Buckeyes rounds of 298-293-295 for a 886 finish. Northwestern's Jess Daley made it back-to-back Kepler Invitational titles as he won individual medalist honors after shooting rounds of 70-68-72=210 for a seven-stroke victory.
Wolverine senior Michael Harris (Troy, Mich./Troy HS) tied with Northwestern's Luke Donald for tournament runner-up honors. Both finished with tournament totals of 217, with Harris firing rounds of 75-71-71 and Donald shooting 74-69-74.
Senior/junior Scott Hayes (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester HS) shot his third best season total as he finished tied for 13th after firing rounds of 73-74-77 for a 224 tournament total. Sophomore Andrew Chapman (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS) and Mike Affeldt (Charlotte, N.C./Rochester [Mich.] Adams HS) both tied for 41st as they shot totals of 231. Chapman finished with rounds of 77-75-79, while Affeldt fired rounds of 80-73-78. Sophomore Andy Matthews (Ada, Mich./Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central HS) finished tied for 48th (75-79-78=232).
Michigan closes out the tournament season with a trip to East Lansing, Mich., to participate in the Spartan Invitational, Saturday and Sunday, April 29-30. Last year the Wolverines finished tied for eighth of the 17 teams that played at the Forest Akers Course.
