BOISE, Idaho -- The University of Michigan women's gymnastics team closed its 2000 campaign with four athletes competing in the NCAA Championships Individual Event Finals on Saturday (April 15) at The Pavilion on the campus of Boise State University. Michigan senior tri-captain Sarah Cain (Grand Island, Neb./Grand Island HS) gave another stellar effort as she placed in the top five on vault and floor exercise to close out one of the finest careers in Michigan history.
The Wolverines gave a strong showing on the vault by registering two of the top seven spots in the individual finals. Michigan's top vault of the evening came from freshman Janessa Grieco (Mahopac, N.Y./Carmel HS), who placed third with a mark of 9.8440. In the final vault of her Michigan career, Cain registered a mark of 9.8065 to tie for fifth.
Cain was Michigan's only competitor on the uneven bars as well as the floor exercise. She performed a nearly flawless bar routine before taking one step after dismount, leaving her with a mark of 9.7875 to place eighth. She moved on to the floor exercise for the final floor routine of the meet and hit a 9.9000 to finish third.
Michigan junior Christine Michaud (Mill Valley, Calif./The Branson School) and sophomore Shannon MacKenzie (Midland, Mich./Midland HS) made the first individual event final appearances of their careers. Michaud placed 10th on the vault (9.7750), while MacKenzie placed ninth on the balance beam (9.2500).

QUOTES
Michigan Head Coach Beverly Plocki
On Sarah Cain's career ... "Sarah was great again tonight, but I feel a little disappointment for her not winning a national title. If anyone deserves to win a national title it is definitely Sarah Cain, but the fact still remains she has been a tremendous athlete for the University of Michigan for four years."
U-M Freshman Janessa Grieco
On placing third on vault ... "It was definitely unexpected, but I am very excited I was able to go out and stick both of my vaults. We were disappointed with our performance in the Super Six, but it feels good to get a chance to end the season on a high note."
