Wolverines Fade to Ninth at Silver Springs Shores Invite

OCALA, Fla. -- The University of Michigan men's golf team continued its spring season at the Silver Springs Shores Invitational on Saturday and Sunday (March 11-12) at the Country Club at Silver Springs Shores. After sitting in second place after 36 holes the first day, the Wolverines fell back in the final round to finish in ninth place with a three-round total of 869.
Kent took the overall team title with a score of 856 and Methodist's Chad Collins took the individual title after winning a playoff with Colorado State's Nigel Spence on the first hole. They both fired 10-under-par totals of 206.
After battling a back problems most of the winter, sophomore Andy Matthews (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills Central HS) came back in the second spring tournament to lead the Wolverines. He finished tied for ninth with a three-day total of 215. He fired an opening round of 68, which tied a career and season best, following that with a 75 in the second round and closing out with a 72.
Junior Scott Hayes (Rochester, Mich./Rochester HS) finished behind Matthews with a three round total of 218, which was a career-best total. He finished with rounds of 71-73-74. Senior Michael Harris (Troy, Mich./Troy HS) followed with a 219 after rounds of 72-71-76.
Sophomore Andrew Chapman (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS) and senior Mike Affeldt (Charlotte, N.C./Rochester [Mich.] Adams HS) both finished with totals of 221. Chapman fired rounds of 73-71-77, while Affeldt shot 73-72-76. Sophomore Kyle Kilcherman (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City HS) played in his third tournament this season and finished with a 228 three-round total, which was a season best. He had rounds of 75-76-77.
The Wolverines will again head south to participate in the Tanglewood Intercollegiate on Saturday and Sunday, March 25-26, at the Tanglewood Golf Course in Pottsboro, Texas.
