POTTSBORO, Texas -- Led by tournament medalist Michael Harris (Troy, Mich./Troy HS), the University of Michigan men's golf team finished in third place at the 18-team Dr Pepper Intercollegiate, hosted by Northern Illinois University on Saturday and Sunday (March 25-26). The Wolverines shot par or better as a team in each round and matched a season low with a final-round 281 (seven under par) for a season-best, eight-under total of 856 (287-288-281), good for third behind Minnesota (845) and Kent (852) at the par 72, 6,993-yard Tanglewood Resort course.
Harris was under par in each round, shooting 70 in the first round, matching his season low of 67 in the second round and closing with a 69 for a 10-under-par 206 total and a one-shot victory over 36-hole leaders Ben Curtis of Kent and Martin LeMesurier of Minnesota, and Minnesota's Dave Gunderson. Harris' season-low 54-hole total of 206 gave the senior captain his fourth individual title of the 1999-2000 season -- in eight events -- and the eighth of his collegiate career.
Sophomore Andy Matthews (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills Central HS) and Mike Affeldt (Charlotte, N.C./Rochester [Mich.] Adams HS) tied for 23rd with totals of 218, while sophomore Andrew Chapman (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS) finished in a tie for 28th at 219. Senior/junior Scott Hayes (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester HS) closed with a career-low, four-under-par 68 for a 221 total and a tie for 42nd place.
Following a week off, the Wolverines will return to action at the Marshall Invitational April 7-8 at Guyan Golf and Country Club in Huntington, W.Va.
