Wolverines to Seek Third Straight Win at Inverness Intercollegiate

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Two events. Two titles. Now, the University of Michigan men's golf team readies for one of its biggest challenges of the fall season at the Inverness Intercollegiate, Sunday through Tuesday (Sept. 13-15). The three-day, 54-hole event will feature some of the nation's top teams in a 18-team field at the famed Inverness Club, set up as a par 71 at 7,554 yards.

• Portions of Monday's and Tuesday's rounds will be streamed live on ESPN+ from approximately 1-5 p.m. In addition, Sunday's opening round will feature unannounced YouTube coverage on two holes with the link to come.
• The Inverness Intercollegiate features a 189-team field: Auburn, Austin Peay, Clemson, East Tennessee State, Iowa, LSU, Loyola Marymount, Michigan, Ole Miss, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Purdue, Tennessee, Texas Tech, Toledo, Wake Forest, Vanderbilt and Virginia.
• Juniors RJ Arone, Dean Muratore and Nilay Naik lead the Wolverine lineup, while freshman Spencer Shropshire has earned his second straight start. Michigan's fifth starter will be determined following the practice round.
• Inverness Club holds a special place in Michigan men's golf history. At the 2009 NCAA Championships, the Wolverines advanced to match play and reached the national semifinals after finishing sixth in stroke play. Michigan defeated Washington 3-2 in the quarterfinals before falling to eventual national champion Texas A&M in the semifinals.
• Michigan posted three straight top-three finishes at the Inverness Intercollegiate from 2015-17. The Wolverines placed third in 2015 (884), finished third again in 2016 (862) and tied for third in the weather-shortened 2017 event (565, -3). U-M most recently competed at Inverness in 2024, finishing 14th.
• U-M's top recent individual finish at Inverness came in 2016, when Nick Carlson shared medalist honors with a 209 (-4) total to lead Michigan to third place. In 2017, Kyle Mueller paced the Wolverines with a third-place 135 (-7) total, while Carlson tied for sixth at 138 (-4).
• Michigan has opened the 2026-27 season with back-to-back team titles, winning the Virtues Intercollegiate (831, -33) and Island Resort Intercollegiate (823, -41). It marks U-M's first run of consecutive tournament victories since 2008, when it captured the Wolf Run Intercollegiate and Wolverine Invitational.
• The Virtues title was Michigan's third straight at the event, as the Wolverines posted an 831 (-33) total for an 11-shot victory over host Miami (Ohio). U-M followed with a 25-shot win at the Island Resort Intercollegiate, firing an 823 (-41) total at Sage Run Golf Club.
• Michigan also swept the individual titles. Naik earned medalist honors at Virtues with a career-low 201 (-15), tied for the third-lowest 54-hole total in program history. Arone followed with his first collegiate title at Island Resort, posting a career-low 202 (-14), tied for the fourth-lowest 54-hole total in program history.
• Naik opened Virtues with back-to-back career-low 66s (-6), totaled 23 birdies and collected his third career individual title. Arone carded three sub-70 rounds at Island Resort (66-67-69), made just two bogeys over 54 holes and added 16 birdies and 36 pars.
• With the two team wins and individual titles, head coach Zach Barlow has guided Michigan to seven team titles and 13 individual crowns during his eight-year tenure.
• Michigan has opened the fall with six straight sub-par team rounds, averaging 275.67 per round and sitting a combined 74-under par. Five of the six rounds have been under 280, including a season-low 273 (-15) in the second round at Island Resort.
• Arone leads the Wolverines with a 68.17 scoring average (409, -23), followed by Naik at 68.67 (412, -20) and Muratore at 69.50 (417, -15). The trio combined for 17 of Michigan's 18 under-par individual rounds; the other was even par.
