Michigan Maintains Sixth Place at Texas Invitational

AUSTIN, Texas -- In the second day of competition at the Texas Invitational, the No. 9-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team maintained its sixth-place position on Saturday (Dec. 2). Michigan increased its score to 221 points, with one more day of action slated for Sunday. No. 1-ranked Texas held onto its first-place lead, increasing its score to 543 points.
U-M turned in six top-eight performances -- five individual and one relay. The Wolverines were led by team captain Scott Werner's (Haymarket, Va./Paul VI HS) runner-up finish in the 100-yard breaststroke. The honorable mention All-American finished the event in an NCAA consideration time of 55.23.
Freshman Dan Ketchum (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore HS) continued his strong performance this season with a fifth-place finish in the 400-yard individual medley, clocking in with an NCAA consideration time of 3:55.53. Ketchum was also seventh in the 200-yard freestyle at 1:38.55
The relay squad of Ketchum, 2000 U.S. Olympic bronze medalist Chris Thompson (Roseburg, Ore./Roseburg HS), freshman Christian Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams HS) and junior Jason Mallory (Granger, Ind./Penn HS) finished seventh in the 800-yard medley relay with a time of 6:42.44.
The third and final day of competition is Sunday (Dec. 3). Preliminaries start at 9:30 a.m. CST, followed by finals action at 3 p.m.
