SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team fell 3-1 to No. 1-seeded and undefeated University of Notre Dame on Sunday (Nov. 12) in the NCAA Tournament second round at Alumni Field.
Notre Dame got on the board first with a goal from Meotis Erikson off an assist from Anne Makinen 11:35 into the match. The Wolverines had a chance to tie things up off a shot from midfielder Kacy Bietel (Midland, Mich./H.H. Dow HS) but it hit the crossbar, bounced up and landed behind the net.
Although the Irish outshot the Wolverines 13-2 in the first half, the Maize and Blue made the second shot count. Taking a free kick 40 yards out, sophomore defender Andrea Kayal (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills HS) booted the ball to Beitel. Standing just outside the net, Beitel headed the ball behind Notre Dame goalie Elizabeth Wagner at 30:23.
Taking a 1-1 tie into the second half, the Wolverines came out strong, but Notre Dame's defense proved to be a stingy competitor. Michigan had only two more shots on goal in the course of the second half, spending much of the time guarding its own goal and senior goaltender Carissa Stewart (Topsham, Maine/Mt. Ararat HS).
Stewart reached a milestone in the first half when she played her 6,000th minute of collegiate soccer. She made nine saves in the game, including two diving grabs for the ball in heavy Notre Dame coverage.
Kayal also made an impressive stop on a near-goal from Erikson. Erikson dribbled the ball through defenders and slipped around Stewart and fired a shot away, but Kayal was there to boot the ball from the goal line.
Notre Dame broke the tie at 53:46 on a goal from Amanda Guertin, who caught a pass off Ashley Dryer that was diverted from Ali Lovelace. Guertin waited and fired a low shot behind Stewart. Michigan kept up with the Irish, but at 65:55 Notre Dame put the game away on a Monica Gonzalez goal from Dryer.
The Wolverines finished the 2000 campaign with an impressive 13-9-1 record and a third-place finish in the Big Ten Conference (6-3-1). Notre Dame (21-0-1), the national runner-up in 1999, advances to the third round to face Harvard.

NOTES
• This was the second meeting between the two schools this season. Notre Dame previously defeated the Wolverines 5-1 on Oct. 24 at U-M Soccer Field in Ann Arbor.
• Kacy Beitel's goal was the first time this season any team had scored more than once on the Fighting Irish -- senior Marie Spaccarotella (Livonia, Mich./Churchill HS) scored on the Irish in the team's previous meeting on Oct. 24. It was also only the fourth time any team had come back from a deficit to tie Notre Dame in 2000.
• The 10th goal of Kacy Beitel's senior season also ended Notre Dame goalkeeper Elizabeth Wagner's 701 consecutive minutes of shutout play.
