This Week
The University of Michigan women's soccer team (10-7-1, 6-3-1 Big Ten) will travel to Champaign, Ill., to defend its title at the Big Ten Conference Tournament on Nov. 2-5. The No. 3-seeded Wolverines will face off against the No. 6-seeded Iowa Hawkeyes in the quarterfinal round Thursday (Nov. 2) at 2 p.m. CST at First and Stadium Field on the University of Illinois campus. The semifinals will be played Friday (Nov. 3) and the championship game is scheduled for 2 p.m. CST Sunday. The Wolverines will be looking for their third Big Ten title in four years (1997, '99).
Scouting the Opponents (Quarterfinals/Semifinals)
Iowa -- The No. 6-seeded Hawkeyes finished the regular season with a record of 11-8-0 overall and 5-5-0 in the Big Ten. Michigan leads the series 4-0-0 and defeated the Hawkeyes 3-2 in double overtime on Sept. 29 in Iowa City, Iowa, when Stephanie Chavez (Shorewood, Wis./Shorewood HS) booted the game winner in the 107th minute of play. Wisconsin -- The University of Wisconsin Badgers come into the tournament seeded second in the Big Ten. They finished 15-5-0 overall and 7-3-0 in Big Ten play and are ranked No. 20 in the NSCAA Division I poll. The Badgers lead the series 7-1-1. Michigan fell to Wisconsin 1-0 in the two teams' previous meeting on Sept. 22 in Ann Arbor. Wisconsin scored its lone goal from the team's second leader scorer, Kelly Kundert. Purdue -- The Boilermakers of Purdue University closed out the regular season in a tie for sixth place in the Big Ten. Finishing the season at 12-6-0 (5-5-0 in the Big Ten), the Boilermakers fell 2-1 to the Wolverines in their previous meeting this year, on Sept. 15 in West Lafayette, Ind. Michigan received goals from Stephanie Chavez and Vicky Whitley (Spring, Texas/Klein HS) to give the Wolverines a 2-0 lead in the series. Purdue on the Internet: www.purduesports.com.
Last Week
The Wolverines concluded the regular season with an impressive 7-1 win over non-conference rival Butler on Sunday (Oct. 29) in Indianapolis, Ind. Starting the second half tied at one, the Wolverines exploded offensively, scoring three times in the first seven minutes. Senior midfielder Kacy Beitel (Midland, Mich./H.H. Dow HS) led the Wolverines, finding the net three times. Sophomore Abby Crumpton (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) scored twice for the Michigan. Rounding out the scoring for Michigan were freshmen Amber Wilson (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West HS) and sophomore Michelle Pesiri (New Hyde Park, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy).
Beitel Bits
Senior All-America candidate Kacy Beitel set a school record with eight points and tied another with three goals in the Wolverines' 7-1 win at Butler on Oct. 29. Beitel scored three goals and added two assists for her eight points, one better than the previous record set by Amber Berendowsky in 1997. Beitel leads the team with 24 points. Her hat trick makes her the first Wolverine to accomplish the feat more than once in a career.
Beitel Leads the Big Ten
Senior Kacy Beitel leads the Big Ten in assists, with a total of 10 helpers on the season. Beitel also is seventh in scoring (24 points) and 10th in goals (7). Also representing Michigan among the Big Ten's top 20 scorers are Stephanie Chavez (5 goals, 6 assists, 16 points), Abby Crumpton (7-5-19) and Amber Wilson (7-4-18).
Goalkeepers Carissa Stewart and Suzie Grech (Narbeth, Pa./The Shipley School) represent Michigan in the Big Ten goaltending statistics. Stewart is ranked ninth in saves (53) and 13th in goals against average (1.90). Grech is tied for seventh in GAA (1.40) and 11th in saves (48).
Lucky Sevens
Three Wolverines have scored a team-high seven goals this season. Senior Kacy Beitel, sophomore Abby Crumpton and freshman Amber Wilson each has scored seven goals on the year. These three have accounted for over 50 percent of Michigan's 41 goals this season.
Freshmen Pointers
Two of Michigan's freshmen are making their mark on the Wolverine record book. Amber Wilson has moved into fourth place for most points in a season by a freshman. With her goal and assist in the match against Butler, Wilson accumulated 18 points, moving her within one of former Wolverine Amber Berendowsky. Teammate Stephanie Chavez has also crept into the records, landing comfortably in sixth place with 16 points.
