The University of Michigan women's soccer team (6-4-0, 5-1-0 Big Ten) plays a rare midweek game Wednesday (Oct. 4) against Oakland University at the U-M Soccer Field. The Wolverines are back on the road Sunday (Oct. 8) to battle Big Ten Conference rival Michigan State at Old College Field in East Lansing. With two wins last weekend, Michigan continues to lead the Big Ten with its 5-1-0 conference record.
Scouting the Opponents
Oakland in 2000 -- Oakland brings a 7-2-1 record into Wednesday's contest. The Golden Grizzlies have a six-game wining streak, in which they outscored their opponents 13-5. Oakland's roster boasts a gold medalist, as senior midfielder Anita Rapp played for Norway at the Sydney Olympics. Leading the way offensively for the Golden Grizzlies is junior Ashley McGhee with 18 points, including seven goals. Oakland on the Internet: www.ougrizzlies.com
The Golden Grizzlies Against Michigan -- Michigan won the only previous meeting between the two teams with a 4-1 victory at the U-M Soccer Field last season. Junior Laurie Peterson (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) scored the game-winner for the Wolverines.
Michigan State in 2000 -- After starting the Big Ten season 2-0, Michigan State (7-2-2, 2-2-1 Big Ten) is winless in its last three conference games. The Spartans fell to Illinois (Sept. 24) and Purdue (Sept. 29) and tied Indiana on Sunday (Oct. 1). In the winless streak, Michigan State has scored just two goals while allowing four goals. Last Week
Michigan grabbed two key Big Ten road wins last week to improve its record to 5-1-0 in the conference. The Wolverines downed Iowa in double overtime on Friday (Sept. 29) when freshman Stephanie Chavez (Shorewood, Wis./Shorewood HS) slid a shot past the Hawkeye goalkeeper at 107:37. All-America candidate Kacy Beitel scored three points (one goal, one assist) in Michigan's 4-1 win over Illinois on Sunday (Oct. 1).
The Game Winner
Stephanie Chavez has scored the game-winning goal in both of Michigan's double overtime victories this season. The Wolverines defeated Purdue 2-1 (Sept. 15) and Iowa 3-2 (Sept. 30) in extra time.
Kacy Beitel Watch
Senior All-America candidate Kacy Beitel scored her second goal of the 2000 campaign in a 4-1 victory against Illinois. Beitel assisted on the game-winning goal in the Illinois game. The senior captain has seven points on the season and is five goals away from becoming the all-time career goal-scoring leader at Michigan.
First-Half Points
Michigan has used the first half of its games to catapult to 5-1-0 in the Big Ten. The Wolverines have scored eight of their 15 conference goals in the first stanza, outscoring their conference opponents 8-2.
Stingy Suzie
Freshman goalkeeper Suzie Grech (Narbeth, Pa./The Shipley School) has allowed just one goal in her collegiate career. In her first games as a Wolverine, Grech shut out Missouri (Sept. 10), Indiana (Sept. 17) and Minnesota (Sept. 24) before allowing the lone goal in Michigan's 4-1 victory over Illinois (Oct. 1).
The Streak
Michigan has not lost to Michigan State since 1994, the first year the Wolverines were a varsity program. The last two times Michigan has traveled to East Lansing (1996 and 1998) U-M has outscored the Spartans 9-1.
The Century Club
Michigan head coach Debbie Belkin Rademacher got her 100th and 101st victories of her career in last weekend's sweep of Iowa and Illinois. Two of the four leading scorers for Michigan, Stephanie Chavez and Amber Wilson (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West HS), are first-year players. Defender Erika Kleinholz (North Ridgeville, Ohio/Elyria Catholic HS) recorded two key goals, the first of her career, in the wins over Iowa and Illinois.
