Wolverines Claim First Place in Season-Opening Meet

YPSILANTI, Mich. -- The No. 12-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team kicked off its 2000-01 season in grand fashion, placing first in the Eastern Michigan Quadrangular on Friday (Oct. 27). U-M started off strongly by placing first in eight consecutive events to open the meet, and went on to claim first in 11 of 13 events overall. The Wolverines tallied 781 team points, followed by runner-up Eastern Michigan (538), Michigan State (500) and Oakland University (330).
Overall, U-M finished with eight different first-place performers for the meet, including senior captain Scott Werner (Haymarket, Va./Paul VI HS), who started the season with two first-place performances. The 2000 NCAA Honorable Mention All-American led the pack in the 200-yard individual medley at 1:51.78, and later placed first in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:01.71). Freshman Dan Ketchum (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore HS) turned in two first-place efforts in his first intercollegiate meet, taking both the 200- and 500-yard freestyles in 1:39.24 and 4:29.11, respectively.
The other first-place finishers included the sophomore trio of Paul Ely (Beaverton, Ore./Sunset HS), Garrett Mangieri (Closter, N.J./Mercersburg Academy, Pa.) and Bryce Cox (Kendalville, Ind./East Noble HS). Ely took home the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:51.45, while Mangieri led the charge in the 100-yard freestyle at 45.64. Cox placed first in the one-meter diving with a score of 279.30.
Senior Mike O'Connor (Harper Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North HS) won the 1,000-yard freestyle, clocking in at 9:19.80, over 11 seconds faster than the nearest competitor. Junior Matt Raines (Owosso, Mich./Corunna HS) finished first in the 50-yard freestyle (21.23). Freshman diver Jason Coben (Newtown Square, Pa./Maple Newtown HS) celebrated his first intercollegiate meet with a first-place performance in the three-meter diving (309.15).
The 400-yard medley relay team of junior Jordan Watland (Excelsior, Minn./Minnetonka HS), Werner, sophomore Tony Kurth (Toledo, Ohio/St. Francis de Sales HS) and Ketchum also placed first, clocking in at 3:24.81.
The Wolverines take on two of the top 15 ranked teams in the nation next weekend on the road. U-M faces No. 14 Georgia on Friday (Nov. 3), followed by No. 7 Florida on Saturday (Nov. 4).
