This Week
The University of Michigan women's soccer team (8-6, 6-3 Big Ten) has a busy week with three home games in five days. Michigan faces Big Ten Conference foe Northwestern on Friday (Oct. 20) and then a pair of non-conference opponents, Wisconsin-Milwaukee on Sunday (Oct. 22) at 1 p.m. and perennial soccer powerhouse Notre Dame on Tuesday (Oct. 24) at 4 p.m.
Scouting the Opponents
Northwestern in 2000 -- Northwestern (2-7-1, 1-4-0 Big Ten) is coming off a weekend split. The Wildcats defeated Ohio State 2-1 on Friday (Oct. 13) and fell to a tough Penn State team 1-0 on Sunday (Oct. 15). Wildcat opponents have outscored Northwestern 19-10 on the season. Leading the way for the Wildcats offensively is Katie Hertz with nine points on four goals and one assist. Erin Ekeberg has played all 930 minutes in goal for Northwestern this season. Ekeberg has compiled a 2-7-1 record with a 1.84 goals against average and .765 save percentage. Northwestern on the Internet: www.nusports.com.
The Wildcats Against Michigan -- Michigan leads the all-time series with Northwestern 5-2, including a 1997 Big Ten tournament overtime victory. The Wildcats earned their last victory in 1998 when they defeated the Wolverines 4-2 in Evanston, Ill. The last four games between the teams were decided by two goals or less.
Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 2000 -- The Panthers of Wisconsin-Milwaukee bring an 8-7-1 overall record (4-0 MCC) into the Sunday (Oct. 22) game with Michigan. Wisconsin-Milwaukee traveled to the 1999 NCAA Tournament and looks to repeat that feat in 2000. The Panthers are atop the Midwestern Collegiate Conference with a perfect 4-0 record. The Panthers Against Michigan -- This is the first meeting between Wisconsin-Milwaukee and the Wolverines.
Notre Dame in 2000 -- Notre Dame is the only undefeated team remaining in women's college soccer, with a 15-0-0 overall record earning them a No. 1 ranking. The Fighting Irish have dominated their previous opponents, outscoring them 52-5. The Irish offense is led by Anne Makinen with 10 goals and 11 assists for 31 points. Meotis Erikson is second on the team in scoring with 23 points. Elizabeth Wagner has played 1181 minutes in goal with a .380 goals against average and a .844 save percentage. The Irish Against Michigan -- Michigan is 0-4 all-time against the Irish. Notre Dame has allowed Michigan one goal in the last three meetings between the teams, shutting out Michigan in 1997 in South Bend and in 1998 at the U-M Soccer Field.
Last Week
Michigan earned a weekend split at home, falling to No. 6 Penn State 2-1 in a tightly contested match on Friday (Oct. 13) and defeating the Buckeyes of Ohio State 3-1 on Sunday (Oct. 15). Freshman Amber Wilson (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West HS) scored her sixth goal of the season off a pass from All-America candidate Kacy Beitel (Midland, Mich./H.H. Dow HS) in loss to Penn State. Carissa Stewart (Topsham, Maine/Mt. Ararat HS) made a season-high nine saves in the loss. The Wolverines rebounded Sunday to down the Buckeyes, scoring three-second half goals. Scoring goals for Michigan were sophomore Amy Sullivant (Utica, Mich./Eisenhower HS), rookie sensation Stephanie Chavez (Shorewood, Wis./Shorewood HS) and Beitel. Beitel netted the game-winner against Ohio State with less than eight minutes remaining in the contest.
Kacy Beitel Watch
Senior All-America candidate Kacy Beitel scored four points in last weekend's matches with Penn State and Ohio State. Beitel assisted on the lone goal in the 2-1 loss to No. 6 Penn State. Netting the game-winner against Ohio State, Beitel also assisted on Stephanie Chavez' fifth goal of the season.
Leader of the Pack
Freshman Stephanie Chavez leads the 2000 Wolverines in points with 15 (5 goals, 5 assists). Michigan's underclassmen account for 76.2 percent of Wolverine points scored in the 2000 season.
13 on the 13th
Wolverine freshman Amber Wilson scored her 13th point of the season on Friday, Oct. 13, against Penn State. Wilson is the leading goal scorer for the Wolverines with six, including four goals in the last seven games.
Great Goalkeepers
Splitting time in net this season, freshman Suzie Grech (Narbeth, Pa./The Shipley School) and senior Carissa Stewart have combined for a 1.36 goals against average, almost half (2.05) the average of the opponents' goalkeepers. Grech has made 40 saves for a 0.82 goals against average, and Stewart is credited with 46 saves and a GAA of 1.76.
In the Conference
Friday's (Oct. 20) game with Northwestern is the final regular-season Big Ten game for the Wolverines. Michigan can clinch a tie for second place with a win. The Big Ten Conference standings (through 10/15/00):
