COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Behind a complete-game effort from pitcher Vince Pistilli (Highland, Ind./Highland HS), the University of Michigan baseball team snapped a four-game losing streak with a 3-1 win over Cal State-Northridge on Sunday (March 21) at the Texas A&M Aggie Continental Airlines Classic. In its second game of the day, U-M dropped an 8-2 decision to the host Aggies.
Pistilli (1-0) recorded the first complete game of his college career, going seven innings and allowing five hits and one walk while fanning four. Michigan's defense helped out by playing errorless ball and turning two double plays.
The Wolverines opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the second inning. After loading the bases on two walks sandwiched around a single, Jeff Trzos' (Farmington Hill, Mich./North Farmington HS) RBI fielder's choice scored one run and Scott Tousa (Dallas, Texas/Lake Highlands HS), who went 2-for-3 with a triple, came through with a two-out single to make it 2-0.
The Matadors nicked Pistilli for a run in the bottom of the second as Kevin Patrick led off with a triple and scored on a groundout. But Pistilli allowed only one runner past first base the rest of the game, aided by double plays in the fourth and fifth innings, and the Wolverines added an insurance run on a Jason Alcaraz's (Albuquerque, N.M./Eldorado HS) pinch-hit sacrifice fly in the sixth.
In the nine-inning nightcap, Texas A&M jumped on U-M starter Kirk Taylor (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington HS) early, tagging him for five runs on four hits -- including two two-run homers -- and two walks in two-thirds of an inning before Taylor (0-1) was relieved by Joe Young (Detroit, Mich./Bishop Gallagher HS). Young gave the bullpen a rest by going seven innings, allowing three runs on 10 hits before giving way to Nick Alexander (Alpena, Mich./Alpena HS), who pitched the last inning and a third.
The Wolverines picked up single runs in the first and fifth. Brian Bush's (Warren, Ohio/Howland HS) RBI single in the first extended his hitting streak to 11 games, and Mike Seestedt (Mt. Pleasant, Mich./Sacred Heart HS) scored the second run on an error after doubling to start the fifth inning.
Michigan, 1-4 in the Aggie Classic, will close out tournament play by facing Nevada-Las Vegas at 10 a.m. CST on Monday (March 22). Ryan Kelley (Northville, Mich./Divine Child HS) is the Wolverines' probable starter on the mound.
