Harris Wins Again in Hawaii, Wolverines Finish Fourth

KAMUELA, Hawaii -- Senior Michael Harris (Troy, Mich./Troy HS) made it back-to-back medalist honors during the University of Michigan men's golf team Thanksgiving trip to Hawaii. Harris tied for first with Hawaii-Hilo's Shane Hoshino at the Mauna Kea Resort Invitational, hosted by Hawaii-Hilo on Thursday and Friday (Nov. 25-26) at the Hapuna Golf Club.
Harris trailed Hoshino by three strokes going into the final round but rallied as Hoshino dropped three strokes in the final round as the two finished tied for the title. There was no playoff. Harris finished firing rounds of 74-69-73 for an even-par total of 216, while Hoshino finished with rounds of 71-69-76.
The individual title gives Harris his third title in five events this fall and his seventh career title at Michigan. This season, Harris has won the individual title at the Stan Sheriff Invitational (Nov. 22-23) and the Falcon-Cross Creek Invitational (Sept. 17-19).
Michigan finished fourth as a team as the Wolverines fired rounds of 303-302-301 for an invitational total 906, helping the Big Ten Conference sweep the top four team spots. Minnesota won the overall team title with a 898, Indiana finished second with 904 and Purdue finished third with 905.
Junior Scott Hayes (Rochester, Mich./Rochester HS) recorded his best finish of the fall as he tied for fourth after rounds of 71-77-72 for a four-over 220 invitational finish. Sophomore Andrew Chapman (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS) finished tied for 19th after firing rounds of 77-78-74 for a 229 total.
Senior Mike Affeldt (Charlotte, N.C./Rochester [Mich.] Adams HS) finished tied for 47th with rounds of 84-78-82 for a 244 total, and sophomore Andy Matthews (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills Central HS) rounded out the Wolverine field by tying for 51st after rounds of 81-82-84 for a 247 total.
The Wolverines have finished their fall season and will begin the spring season in March with the Wolverine South Invitational March 4-5 at the Lady's Island Country Club in Beaufort, S.C.
