SAVANNAH, Ga. -- The University of Michigan men's golf team carded a team score of 313 and stands in fourth place after Saturday's (March 4) first-day competition at the 18-team Wolverine South Invitational at Hunter Golf Club. The first day was shortened from 36 holes to 18 due to morning rain. The tournament wraps up with 18 holes Sunday, with a 7:30 a.m. shotgun start.
Methodist College set the pace with a score of 304, two shots ahead of Miami (Ohio) at the midway point. Ohio University is third at 312, followed by Michigan (313) and a trio of teams -- Eastern Kentucky, Marshall and Wisconsin -- tied for fifth place (317).
Chad Collins of Methodist holds the individual lead after one round following his course-record, three-under-par 69 that included four birdies and one bogey. Collins broke the Hunter Golf Club record of 70 set Friday (March 3) by Eastern Kentucky's Eric Willenbrink during the college-am tournament, which featured each of the 18 competing teams' top player.
The Wolverines were led by a pair of 75s from Michael Harris (Troy, Mich./Troy HS) and Andrew Chapman (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS), who are tied for fifth. Scott Hayes (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) fired a 79 and is tied for 16th.
Michigan's Maize team is in last place after shooting 345. The Maize team was led by Ray Coyne (Hinsdale, Ill./St. Ignatius HS), who had an 82.
