Harris Picks Up Sixth Career Title, U-M Finishes Third

KANEOHE, HAWAII -- Senior Michael Harris (Troy, Mich./Troy HS) and the University of Michigan men's golf team headed far west to Hawaii, escaping the cold of the Midwest, and Harris ended up heating up the Ko'olau Golf Club as he won the individual title at the Stan Sheriff Invitational, hosted by the University of Hawaii on Monday and Tuesday (Nov. 22-23). The Wolverines finished tied for third in the 11-team field after shooting rounds of 317-311-301 for a invitational total of 929.
Harris, who won his second individual title this season and sixth of his college career, finished first in the 56-player field after firing rounds of 75-75-73 for a 7-over-par tournament total of 223. Harris held off San Francisco's Chad Thompson and Hawaii's Jaime Matsumura, who finished tied for second after firing tournament rounds of 224. Earlier this season, Harris won the Falcon-Cross Creek Invitational (Sept. 17-19).
Sophomore Andy Matthews (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills Central HS) started off the tournament with unlikely round scores of 80-82 but recovered in the final round, firing a 73 to finish tied for 16th with a tournament total of 235. Junior Scott Hayes (Rochester, Mich./Rochester HS) and sophomore Andrew Chapman (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS) tied for 19th after invitational totals of 236. Hayes finished with rounds of 84-77-75, while Chapman fired rounds of 78-78-80. Senior Mike Affeldt (Charlotte, N.C./Rochester [Mich.] Adams HS) rounded out the Wolverines' five-man team, finishing tied for 26th after rounds 84-81-80 for a 245 total.
The Wolverines will continue their Thanksgiving trip at the Mauna Kea Collegiate Invitational on Thursday and Friday (Nov. 25-26) at Hapuna Golf Club in Kamuela, Hawaii.
