Late Goals Boost Wolverines Past Ferris State
1/8/1999 12:00:00 AM | Ice Hockey
Jillson, who had missed the previous three games while representing the United States at the World Junior Championships in Canada, scored the game-winner at 13:16 of the third period. Mark Kosick (Victoria, B.C.) started the play, skating down the right side boards. After skating past the face-off dot, Kosick centered the puck to Dale Rominski (Farmington Hills, Mich.), who dropped the pass off to Jillson. Jillson buried the shot into the upper left-hand corner to give Michigan the 3-2 lead.
Following a scoreless first period, Michigan got on the board 3:06 into the second stanza. With a man advantage, the Wolverines moved the puck around the offensive zone, with Jillson and Kosick making quick passes to find a wide open Mike Comrie (Edmonton, Alberta) at the left post. Comrie banged the puck into the net for his 10th goal of the season, giving Michigan a 1-0 edge heading into the third period.
Ferris State grabbed the lead with goals by Brian McCullough and Ed Kowalski at 1:49 and 6:54 of the third period. McCullough's goal, a power-play tally, was his sixth of the season, while Kowalski's goal was his third of the year.
The Wolverines tied the score with 9:13 left in the game on Josh Langfeld's (Coon Rapids, Minn.) break-away goal, his 10th of the season. Langfeld was sprung by passes from Jillson and goaltender Josh Blackburn (Choctaw, Okla.), giving Blackburn his first career assist.
The Wolverines and Bulldogs meet again tomorrow night (Jan. 9) at 7 p.m. in Yost Arena.

NOTES
QUOTES
HEAD COACH RED BERENSON
On the game ...
"It was a hard-fought game. Ferris State is a real good team. I have said it about Ohio State, this team is as good as any team in our league. I really liked the way they played. If they had just capitalized on some of their early chances, we might have been in a bigger hole."
On the third period ...
"I thought our team came out stronger, and it was anyone's game. They took the lead; it was a tough lead to lose when we were up 1-0 and then all of a sudden we are down 2-1. I like the way our team stayed in the game and kept our heads. I thought we got stronger in that part of the game."
On the return of Josh Langfeld and Jeff Jillson ...
"We need someone who can put the puck in the net, and Langfeld is that player. And Jeff Jillson ... here is a guy who has not had a day off since he left here on December 12th. He couldn't wait to come back. He wanted to play. He is going to take some time off after this weekend. He came back and had a huge game for us. He had a great game."
FRESHMAN DEFENSEMAN JEFF JILLSON
On returning to the team ...
"Yeah, it felt good to be back with the boys and have a great victory like that. It really feels good."
On his goal ...
"Well, (Mark) Kosick made a great play to break out the puck. I just skated up to try to jump into the play with them, and he dropped it back to (Dale Rominski). Rominski made a great play to the net, and it came around to me. I am not sure if he (Ferris State goaltender Vince Owen) ever saw it."
