1/9/1999 12:00:00 AM | Ice Hockey
The Wolverines (15-4-2, 12-2-1 CCHA) started the scoring 3:36 into the first period with a goal by Scott Matzka (Port Huron, Mich.) from Jeff Jillson (North Smithfield, R.I.) and Dave Huntzicker (Ann Arbor, Mich.), but Ferris State answered back two minutes later with a goal by Kenzie Homer. The battle for control of this meeting continued as Huntzicker scored an unassisted, power-play goal to give the Wolverines the lead heading into the first intermision.
The Bulldogs (9-7-3, 8-5-2 CCHA) tied the game six minutes in the second period with Homer's second goal of the evening and third of the weekend, but Sean Ritchlin (Conseco, N.Y.) gave the lead back to Michigan with a goal from Justin Clark (Grand Rapids, Mich.).
Mike Comrie (Edmonton, Alberta) added the eventual game-winner with Michigan's second unassisted goal of the night 32 seconds into the final period. It was Comrie's team-leading 11th goal and 23rd point of the season. Ferris State made it a one-goal game when Jason Hodel scored with six minutes remaining to settle the score at 4-3.
Michigan finishes the three-game set with Ferris State by heading to Big Rapids, Mich., for a 7 p.m. game on Friday, Jan. 15.

QUOTES
HEAD COACH RED BERENSON
On playing Scott Matzka on wing ...
"Well, he played really well of late. We decided to put him on the wing and get him the puck when he's skating. (Jeff) Jillson gave him the puck. He made it look easy. I think he can score goals from the wing better than center. He's been killing penalties with Geoff Koch and we're gaining confidence in them. It's nice to see younger players assuming bigger roles on the team."
On moving Langfeld to the first line ...
"We're trying to balance lines on offense. We made some changes this week. I like Langfeld on that line. He's a threat to score, plus he's a physical, hard-working player. I like that line with him on it. We're moving guys to try to find where guys are going to be more successful."
On the return of Jillson, Langfeld and Van Ryn ...
"I'm glad to have (Josh) Langfeld, (Jeff) Jillson and (Mike) Van Ryn back. They make a big difference on the team."
SOPHOMORE RIGHT WING SCOTT MATZKA
On playing with Josh Langfeld's stick ...
"Today is the first day using this new stick. (Dave Huntzicker) used it as well. It had two goals before the weekend, now it has four. (Josh Langfeld) seems to get some good bounces off of it."
On the differences in the two sticks ...
"Nothing. It's all in my head."
SOPHOMORE DEFENSEMAN DAVE HUNTZICKER
On the return of Jillson, Langfeld and Van Ryn ...
"Getting those guys back is a big lift for our team. They bring size, speed and strength. It really helps that we got some leaders there. Everything about those guys helps our team, and our team is a better team."
FRESHMAN CENTER MIKE COMRIE
On his goal ...
"A lane opened up. I put it on net and hit the top shelf. Good things happen when you put it on net. Goaltenders don't give up much room, so you have to try to keep putting it in there."
