WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The University of Michigan women's golf team placed 10th at the Lady Northern Intercollegiate, competing against a 14-team field that included all 11 Big Ten Conference schools. The 54-hole event, held Friday through Sunday (Sept. 25-27) at the par-72 Kampen Golf Course, is a fall prelude to the Big Ten Championships, which will be contested on the same golf course April 30-May 2, 1999.
Michigan State, which entered the final round in a three-way tie for third, won the tournament with a final round 306 for a 947 total, four strokes ahead of defending Big Ten champion Indiana.
Michigan senior Sharon Park (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay HS) was Michigan's top finisher, tying for 31st among 88 competitors with a 247 score. Freshman Bess Bowers (Bloomington, Ind./North HS) returned to her native state and turned in a 249 total to tie for 35th. One stroke behind her was fellow freshman Misia Lemanski (Grosse Ile, MI/Grosse Ile HS), who tied for 40th at 250.
Also competing for the Woverines were sophomore Trish Watkins (Darien, Conn./Darien HS), who placed 58th at 259, freshman LeAnna Wicks (Brighton, Mich./Brighton HS), who finished tied for 60th at 263, and freshman Stephanie Bezilla (Grandville, Mich./Grandville HS), who ended with a 268 total to tie for 69th overall.
Next up for Michigan is its only home tournament of the season -- the Wolverine Invitational on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 3-4, at the University of Michigan Golf Course.
