ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Michigan State University's Kasey Gant fired a one-over-par 74 to take the individual lead and help the Spartans to a five-stroke edge in the team standings after the first day of the University of Michigan Wolverine Women's Golf Invitational on Saturday (Oct. 3). The first day was shortened from 36 holes to 18 due to rainy weather at the par-73, 5962-yard U-M Golf Course.
Michigan State finished with a 316 total, putting the Spartans five shots ahead of Northwestern (321) and 12 ahead of third-place Purdue (328) in the 13-team field. The host Wolverines are tied for fourth place with Cincinnati at 330.
Gant's 74 gives her a two-shot edge over Michigan's Sharon Park (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay HS), who carded a three-over 76. Emily Gilley from Northwestern is three strokes out of the lead at 77, with four others tied for fourth at 78.
A final round of 18 holes is scheduled for Sunday (Oct. 4) with a 9 a.m. shotgun start.
