Langfeld's OT Goal Lifts Michigan Over Niagara
10/16/1998 12:00:00 AM | Ice Hockey
With 10 seconds left in the overtime, the Wolverines worked the puck down low in the Niagara zone. Mark Kosick (Victoria, B.C.) flipped a shot from the top of the goal crease to the left of Niagara goalie Greg Gardner. The shot was saved by Gardner, but the rebound came loose and Langfeld swatted the puck into the goal for his first goal of the season and 20th of his career.
The game was close throughout, with neither team able to lead by more than one goal. Niagara opened the scoring with a power-play goal by Chris MacKenzie 4:36 into the game.
The Wolverines answered at 15:28 of the opening period when freshman Mike Comrie (Edmonton, Alberta) scored the first of his two goals on the night. Comrie also added two assists for a total of four points in the game. Comrie's second goal, on a power play 13:52 into the second period, tied the game 3-3.
Mike Van Ryn (London, Ont.) gave Michigan a 2-1 lead 36 seconds into the second period with his first goal of the season and fifth of his career, but Niagara tallied goals from Colin Rows and Peter DeSantis to take a 3-2 lead. Following Comrie's second goal of the game, Niagara's Jay Kasperek scored to give the Purple Eagles a 4-3 advantage heading into the final period.
With 5:10 left in the game, senior assistant captain Bobby Hayes (Westland, Mich.) scored his first goal of the season to tie the score at 4-all. Kosick gave Michigan a 5-4 edge 1:33 later with his first goal of the season off a pass from Geoff Koch (Exeter, N.H.). Niagara's Kyle Martin knotted the score for the final time with redirection of Scott McDonald's shot from the right point with just 2:30 left in the game.
Michigan and Niagara return to action Saturday (Oct. 17) night with a 7 p.m. game at Yost Ice Arena.
