Ice Hockey Falls to Niagara 2-1
10/17/1998 12:00:00 AM | Ice Hockey
After a scoreless first period, the Wolverines scored first when Justin Clark (Grand Rapids, Mich.) netted a loose puck at 12:19 of the second period. Mark Kosick (Victoria, B.C.) carried the puck out in front of the Niagara net, but his shot attempt was saved by the Purple Eagles' goaltender, Greg Gardner. The rebound bounced around in the crease until Clark was able to swat it into the net for his first goal of the season and eighth of his career.
Niagara tied the game with 0:36 left in the second period on Mikko Sivonen's first goal of the year, and the Purple Eagles took the lead at 9:37 of the third period as Mike Isherwood slid the puck under Michigan goaltender Kevin O'Malley's (Grosse Point, Mich.) pads. O'Malley stopped 15 of 17 shots in his first career start.
Michigan, which one night earlier outshot Niagara 52-16 in a 6-5 overtime win, had 34 shots to Niagara's 17 on Saturday, but the Wolverines were 0-for-11 on power-play opportunities.
The Wolverines return to action next weekend (Oct. 23-24) when they travel to Alaska-Fairbanks for a two-game series. Michigan's next home game is Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. against Bowling Green.

QUOTES
COACH RED BERENSON
On the outcome ...
"I am not surprised. Either team could have won the game."
On his assessment of the team ...
"We have to get up to the next level. We have to work harder in practice and get a fever and a passion like they (Niagara) had tonight."
SOPHOMORE MIKE VAN RYN
On the loss ...
"I think it was more of what we didn't do tonight."
On the number of opponent glove saves ...
"We have to make sure we keep the puck down low so we can get the rebound. I think we were just shooting too high (on shots from the point)."
FRESHMAN KEVIN O'MALLEY
On pregame nerves ...
"I am nervous about everything else at Michigan, but when I step out on the ice I'm not. This (playing hockey) is what we all grew up doing."
