McKenney, Cadeau Take Over Fourth Quarter to Lift Michigan Past Mega SUPERBET

IGALO, Montenegro -- Playing inside a sweltering Sportski Centar, the University of Michigan men's basketball team erased a 14-point first-half deficit and pulled away late, saving its best basketball for the fourth quarter, for an 84-81 victory over KK Mega SUPERBET on Thursday (Aug. 27), earning its first win of the European tour.
Trey McKenney and Elliot Cadeau took over when Michigan needed them most, scoring 19 of U-M's 22 fourth-quarter points. McKenney finished with a game-high 25 points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals, while Cadeau added 15 points in just over 17 minutes due to foul trouble.
J.P. Estrella scored 16 points on 7-for-11 shooting before fouling out, and Quinn Costello added nine points, five rebounds and three assists. Oscar Goodman finished with eight points, five rebounds and four assists.
Michigan spent most of the opening half playing from behind. Mega led 24-19 after the first quarter before McKenney and Marcus Møller opened the second with three-pointers, briefly putting the Wolverines ahead 25-24.
From there, turnovers and transition opportunities allowed Mega to take control. The professional club used a 23-8 stretch to build its largest lead, 47-33, with 1:35 remaining in the half. Estrella answered with a hook shot before Goodman connected from deep, trimming Michigan's deficit to 49-38 at the break.
"It was definitely a physical game," said McKenney. "We didn't have the momentum we thought we would have going into the game in the first half, but we came out in the second half."
The Wolverines began working their way back in the third. Goodman opened the second half with another three-pointer, while Costello and McKenney also connected from long range as U-M pulled within 53-50.
Mega pushed its advantage back to seven, but Michigan answered with seven straight points. Malachi Brown started the run with a dunk, McKenney followed with a jumper and Møller buried a three-pointer to tie the game at 59.
After Mega moved back ahead by six, McKenney knocked down a pull-up three with 33 seconds remaining, sending Michigan into the fourth trailing 65-62. He then opened the final quarter with a driving layup, but Mega answered to take a 67-64 lead. That was when Cadeau and the Wolverines made their move.
Cadeau made five straight free throws to put Michigan ahead, Costello drilled a three-pointer and McKenney added another driving layup. Cadeau then buried a three of his own, completing a 13-0 run that turned a three-point deficit into a 77-67 lead.
A Cadeau layup gave Michigan its largest advantage, 80-69, with 3:40 remaining. Mega made one final push, but McKenney's three-point play with 1:23 left restored a nine-point lead. Mega scored seven straight points in the closing minute and pulled within 83-81 on Andrej Musicki's three-pointer with two seconds remaining. McKenney made one free throw on the other end, and Lucas Maniema's potential tying three missed at the buzzer.
"We had a meeting a couple days ago just talking about Michigan culture and Michigan basketball," said McKenney. "I think we really showed tonight what we could be throughout the season. I'm excited to get back to Ann Arbor, get the group under one arena, practice for a couple months and get ready for the season."
Michigan shot 48.3 percent from the floor and made 12 three-pointers while holding Mega to 37.3 percent shooting, including a 6-for-32 showing from beyond the arc. The Wolverines also finished with a 41-35 advantage on the boards.
The victory gave Michigan a 1-2 record during its three-game European tour.
