GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Led by a top-20 finish from senior Lauren Sung and three Wolverines among the top 40, the 49th-ranked University of Michigan women's golf team closed with a 298 on Sunday (March 8) to post an 875 54-hole total and tie for seventh at the Gators Invitational at Mark Bostick Golf Course.
Following their spring break training trip, the Wolverines traveled to Gainesville to compete in Florida's home event for the sixth straight season. Highlighted by an opening 69 (-1) from Sung and a 71 (+1) from freshman Reese Ng, Michigan posted a 287 to sit in fourth after 18 holes.
Behind a second-round 71 (+1) from Sung and a 72 from senior Mara Janess, the Wolverines posted a 290 in the second round to remain tied for fourth after 36 holes with a 577 total. As weather rolled in during the final round, the 14-team field moved quickly to complete play as Michigan closed with a 298. Led by a 73 from sophomore Thomasine Bartholdson, the Wolverines slipped three spots to tie for seventh at 875, matching South Florida.
With a 216, Sung led the Wolverines for the fourth time in seven events, recording her third top-20 finish with a tie for 19th. Janess followed in 39th with a 221, while Reese Ng placed 40th with a 222. In her first collegiate start, freshman Jaymie Ng tied for 41st with a 223.
The Wolverines return to tournament action at the end of the month, traveling to St. Augustine, Fla., for the Coach Mo Classic on Monday and Tuesday (March 30-31). The two-day, 54-hole event will be hosted by Furman and North Florida at St. John's Golf & Country Club.
