LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Sophomore right-handed pitcher Kat Meyers tossed the second no-hitter of her collegiate career as the University of Michigan softball team rolled to an 8-0, five-inning win at Liberty on Tuesday night (March 3) at LU Softball Stadium.
Meyers faced just one batter over the minimum and was a second-inning walk away from a perfect game. She struck out two LU batters -- in the first and third innings -- and dispatched the Flames on 13 pitches in the bottom of the fifth with back-to-back groundouts and a game-ending popout to second base. Meyers previously threw a five-inning perfect game against North Carolina Central during last season's spring break trip.
Michigan put up crooked numbers in the first and fourth innings en route to its fifth run-rule game of the season. The top of the Michigan lineup combined for three hits, five runs and five RBI, while senior second baseman Janelle Ilacqua continued her tear from the No. 9 spot, going 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.
Sophomore right fielder Lauren Putz capitalized on back-to-back free bases to open the game, bombing a no-doubt, three-run blast -- after a generous strike call made it 3-2 -- deep over the right-field wall for her 11th homer of the season.
The Wolverines batted around in the fourth and put up five runs -- all with two outs -- on four hits, three walks and a pair of Liberty errors. Ilacqua keyed the rally with a roped RBI single to right, and when the Flames attempted to throw her out advancing to second, an error allowed senior shortstop Avery Fantucci to also score on the play. Flipping the order, senior left fielder Indiana Langford drew her second walk of the game, and junior center fielder Jenissa Conway launched the next pitch over the left fielder's head and to the wall to score two on a standup double.
The Wolverines (16-5) will travel to Harrisonburg, Va., on Wednesday (March 4) for a 4 p.m. slate against James Madison at the Dukes' Bank of the James Field at Veterans Memorial Park. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+.
