Swenson Clinches Win for Wolverines at Northwestern

EVANSTON, Ill. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team rallied from a 3-0 deficit to defeat Northwestern, 4-3, on Sunday (March 22) at the Combe Tennis Center.
Senior Bjorn Swenson clinched the win for the Wolverines, his third match clincher of the year at No. 2 singles. No. 73 Swenson took Cyrus Mahjoob to a lengthy first-set tiebreak, ultimately taking it 7-6 (10-8) before securing a 6-4 second-set victory to lift Michigan (7-7, 3-3 Big Ten) to the win.
The Wildcats took the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2. The No. 25-ranked pair of Greyson Casey and Carter Pate handed Max Dahlin and Pierce Shaya their first doubles loss of the season, snapping the Wolverine duo's five-match win streak. Mahjoob and Ethan Schiffman then took a 7-6 (5) decision from the No. 66-ranked tandem of Swenson and Nicholas Steiglehner.
Northwestern gained a 3-0 lead with wins at No. 6 and No. 4 before Dahlin delivered at No. 1 singles. The No. 10-ranked Wolverine won his ninth straight match with a 6-4, 7-6 (4) victory over Pate.
Mert Oral continued his hot streak, extending it to seven consecutive matches, as he dispatched Casey with matching 6-4 sets.
Shaya evened the team score at 3-3, winning at No. 5 over Cooper Han, 6-4, 7-6 (5).
Michigan returns home Friday (March 27) to host UCLA at 6 p.m. The Wolverines will then take on USC on Sunday (March 29) at noon at the Varsity Tennis Center.
