ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team fell short in a 4-2 decision to No. 20-ranked UCLA on Friday (March 27) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
UCLA (12-3, 6-0 Big Ten) secured the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions.
Max Dahlin and Pierce Shaya dropped a 6-3 match to UCLA's No. 32-ranked pair of Spencer Johnson and Emon van Loben Sels at the No. 1 position.
The Bruins clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win at No. 2, as Andy Nguyen and Aadarsh Tripathi topped Bjorn Swenson and Alex Cairo after breaking serve late in the set.
UCLA made it 2-0 when Cassius Chinlund defeated Cairo at No. 5 singles, 6-3, 6-0.
No. 10-ranked Dahlin squared off with No. 66-ranked Spencer Johnson and took a 6-4 first set before continuing to dominate the second, winning 6-2 to pull Michigan within one.
Dahlin extended his win streak to 10 straight, improving to 12-1.
No. 33-ranked Emon van Loben Sels pushed the Bruins ahead 3-1 with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Mert Oral at No. 3.
At No. 4, Nicholas Steiglehner jumped out to a 4-1 lead against Nguyen and cruised to a 6-2 first set. He maintained momentum in the second, closing out a 6-4 win to bring the team score to 3-2.
The No. 6 match was tightly contested between Shaya and Bengt Reinhard. Reinhard won the final three games to claim a 6-3 first set before clinching the match with a 6-4 second-set win.
An intense match on court 2 between No. 73 Swenson and No. 119 Rudy Quan was unfinished in a close third set.
Michigan returns home on Sunday (March 29), hosting No. 24-ranked USC at noon at the Varsity Tennis Center.
