LINCOLN, Neb. -- The University of Michigan softball team stayed within striking distance in both games and held a late lead in the finale, but dropped both ends of a doubleheader, 8-4 and 5-2, at No. 10 Nebraska on Saturday (March 14) at the Cornhuskers' Bowlin Stadium.
Junior center fielder Jenissa Conway paced the Wolverines over the two games, while senior second baseman Indiana Langford collected a pair of hits in the second contest. Junior right-handed pitcher Erin Hoehn also went 2-for-3 in the nightcap and drove in both Michigan runs. The Wolverines totaled 13 hits across the doubleheader, outhitting Nebraska in the second game.
Conway gave Michigan an immediate spark with a one-out solo home run in the first inning of the day's first game, crushing her sixth homer of the season off the building beyond the right-field wall.
Nebraska answered with a two-run homer in the second, and after Michigan tied the game when Conway doubled and then scored on sophomore right fielder Lauren Putz's RBI double to left-center in the third, the Huskers scored on an RBI single up the middle in the home half to take the lead for good.
The Huskers posted a pair of solo homers in the fifth, but Michigan trimmed Nebraska's lead to one run in the sixth on senior second baseman Janelle Ilacqua's two-run infield single off the first baseman's glove. Any Wolverine was stymied in the bottom half of the inning when the strike zone seemed to tighten as Nebraska loaded the bases with two outs and pushed across runs with a walk and a two-run single.
Nebraska broke the scoreless tie with a two-out solo homer in the fourth inning of the finale. Langford and Conway beat out back-to-back infield singles to lead off the fifth, advanced on a groundout, and scored when Hoehn drove a bouncing two-run single up the middle to give U-M a 2-1 advantage.
Nebraska responded in the home half of the inning; however, again loading the bases with two outs before tying the game with a single to right and retaking the lead with a full-count walk. The Huskers added a two-run homer in the sixth for the game's final margin.
Junior RHP Gabby Ellis (8-2) took the game-two loss after allowing just three runs on four hits and two walks over 4.2 innings. She also gave up three runs on three hits and three walks in relief in game one. Hoehn (3-3) started and took that loss, allowing five runs on seven hits with three strikeouts through five innings.
The Wolverines (19-9, 0-3 Big Ten) kick off their home slate next weekend when they host Washington for the first Big Ten Conference series between the two programs at the Wilpon Complex, home of Carol Hutchins Stadium and Alumni Field. Game times are set for 5 p.m. on Friday (Feb. 20), 2 p.m. on Saturday (Feb. 21) and noon on Sunday (Feb. 22). Tickets are still available through the U-M Ticket Office.
