
Howard Wins Heptathlon Bronze, U-M Third After Day Two at B1G Indoor Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team remains in third place with 17 points after the second day of the Big Ten Indoor Championships on Friday (Feb. 27) at Fall Creek Pavilion. Sophomore Neil Howard led the team's day-two effort, finishing third in the heptathlon, while two Wolverines recorded top-10 program marks.
Howard entered the day in sixth place in the heptathlon with three events remaining. He improved to fifth after running 8.32 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles, while Tyler Baker saw a personal-best 8.25 to sit in 12th overall. Howard moved into third after clearing 4.90 meters (16 feet, 0.75 inches) in the pole vault and Baker moved into 11th (4.40m/14-5.25) with one event left.
Howard ran 2:43.70 in the 1,000-meter run to secure a third-place finish. His score of 5,673 points is just 50 points shy of his personal best. Baker ended the day in 11th place with 5,059 points, the No. 10 mark on the program performers list.
Trent McFarland will look to defend his mile run crown on Saturday after winning his preliminary heat with a time of 4:00.93 to advance to the finals. Brendan Herger (4:00.87) and Riley Flemington (4:02.56) will also race in the finals after advancing on time.
Camden Law finished ninth in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:48.36, just 0.28 seconds shy of advancing to the finals. John O'Reilly finished 11th (1:48.81) and Miles Brown finished 22nd (1:51.30).
In the 60-meter dash, Corey Royster tied the No. 2 time on the program performers list with a personal-best time of 6.70 seconds to finish 11th.
The Wolverines will close out the Big Ten Indoor Championships on Sunday (Feb. 28), with the pole vault set to kick off the day at 12:30 p.m. All of the day three action from Fall Creek Arena will be streamed live on B1G+.
