MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The No. 5-ranked University of Michigan women's gymnastics team took its first loss of the season, 197.100-196.375, at No. 20 Minnesota to open its Big Ten Conference season on Saturday (Jan. 17) at Maturi Pavilion.
Junior Kayli Boozer won her second straight balance beam title with a 9.950, and sophomore Sophie Parenti placed fourth overall with a career-best 9.900. Freshman Myli Lew tied for third on the uneven bars with a 9.850.
Senior Lily Clapper stuck her second straight uneven bars landing in the first rotation, while freshman Lew and graduate student Carly Bauman led Michigan with matching 9.850s. U-M recorded a team score of 49.050 in the first rotation, and Minnesota entered the second rotation after a 49.250 on the vault.
Junior Ava Jordan and sophomore Jahzara Ranger paced the Wolverines on the vault in the second rotation with 9.825s and Reyna Guggino scored a 9.800 for the Maize and Blue. Lew made her collegiate debut on the vault in the anchor spot. Michigan continued to trail Minnesota at the halfway point with a running score of 98.025.
Freshman Quincy Walters continued to impress on floor exercise with a 9.850 in the second spot and Bauman matched it in the fifth as the Wolverines went into the final rotation with a 146.950.
Parenti stepped up in the leadoff spot on the beam with a career-high 9.900 and Walters notched a 9.850 in the second spot. Boozer tied a career-high 9.950 to earn her second straight title and Bauman anchored with a 9.825 as the Wolverines finished with a 196.375 against the Golden Gophers, who scored a 197.100 for the win.
U-M kicks off its home season next Saturday (Jan. 24), when it welcomes Iowa to Crisler Center for the 10th annual Flip for Chip Meet. The meet against the Hawkeyes is set to start at 3:45 p.m. and will be streamed live on B1G+.
