CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team swept Virginia (25-20, 25-19, 26-24) on Saturday morning (Sept. 13) at the UVA Aquatic and Fitness Center, avenging their five-set setback to the Cavaliers on Friday night.
After winning the first two sets, Michigan (7-1) trailed 18-15 in the third set after a long run by Virginia (5-3). The Wolverines responded and tied the match at 19 after kills from Allison Jacobs and Serena Nyambio and a block assist from Ella Demetrician and Nyambio. UVA took a 21-19 lead, but a Nyambio kill and an ace from Morgan Burke tied the match at 21. Michigan tied the match at 22, but Virginia kept its lead and reached set point. Lydia Johnson took over the match and recorded four straight kills to give U-M the 26-24 set win and 3-0 match win.
Jacobs led the way with 16 kills on the day on 40 swings and added two aces and five digs. Johnson also recorded double-digit kills with 10 and did so on a .450 hitting percentage with just one error. Nyambio was close behind with nine kills on 13 swings and one error for a .615 hitting percentage. At setter, Burke led the way with 24 assists and seven digs while Ellie White recorded 15 assists with one ace. Demetrician led the team in digs with 13 and added two aces and six kills. Jenna Hanes was the team leader in blocks with three and recorded six kills on eight swings.
A Virginia service error opened the match, and the teams went back and forth early until a 3-0 run for Michigan knotted the score at four. UVA responded and tied the match at seven before taking the lead with an ace. The Wolverines responded with an 8-1 run, paced by Demetrician with two kills and an ace. The Cavaliers went on a 3-0 run, but U-M countered with one of its own, led by Hanes, who tallied a kill and solo block. UVA tried to come back and managed to take six of the final 10 points, but the U-M lead was too large as a Virginia attack error gave the Wolverines the first set, 25-20.
The second set started out as a close battle with seven ties from the start, the last when the game was tied at eight on a Nyambio kill. A UVA attack error and kill from Jacobs put U-M in front by two, and UVA did not tie the set the rest of the way despite getting within one point multiple times. The Wolverines went on a 3-0 run to go up 16-12, including an ace from Hanes and a kill from Nyambio. Virginia countered with a 3-0 spurt of its own, but a kill from Nyambio kept Michigan in front. The teams traded the next couple of points until the Wolverines ended the match on a 6-1 run, finished by a kill and ace from Jacobs.
Michigan opened the third set on a 9-2 run led by four kills from Jacobs and a kill and ace from Demetrician. The teams traded a few points before a 3-0 UVA run closed the gap to 12-8. Both teams went back and forth again until a kill from Jacobs put Michigan up 15-11. After that, the Cavaliers went on a 7-0 run to take an 18-15 lead to force U-M to use both timeouts. The Wolverines completed the comeback, including taking the final four points of the match to win the third set 26-24.
The Wolverines will return home for a midweek contest against Central Michigan at 7 p.m. on Wednesday (Sept. 17) inside Cliff Keen Arena. The match will be streamed live on B1G+.
