ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team took down Central Michigan 8-7 on Wednesday night (May 7) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium, scoring early and surviving a late comeback attempt.
Benny Casillas and Tyler Inge led Michigan (31-17) offensively. Casiilas tallied three hits, including a three-run home run, while Inge added two hits, three RBI and one run. Mitch Voit added his 33rd career home run in the contest, a two-run blast in the sixth. Grant Bradley struck out three over two innings, allowing three runs. Preston Barr (1-0) picked up the win in relief, pitching 3.1 innings and allowing one run on four hits. Dylan Vigue earned his first save of the season with a scoreless ninth.
CMU opened the second inning, and the game's scoring, with a solo homer, but Michigan responded in the bottom half of the frame. Matt Spear drew a one-out walk and Inge singled to bring up Casillas, who homered to left field to put Michigan in front 3-1.
The Chippewas responded with two runs on three hits in the third inning, but the Wolverines answered once again. A one-out single from Cole Caruso and back-to-back walks loaded the bases. Inge singled to score Caruso and Colby Turner to put Michigan back in front 5-3.
Barr, who ended the third inning, tossed a 1-2-3 fourth to slow the CMU offense. However, Central Michigan used three two-out singles to cut the U-M lead to 5-4. A Turner single opened the bottom of the inning, and after a walk and a sacrifice bunt, Inge grounded out, allowing Turner to score.
In the sixth inning, Barr and Will Rogers combined to keep the Chippewas scoreless and Voit's home run scored Brayden Jefferis to add to U-M's lead. CMU began a comeback, scoring three eighth-inning runs to bring the score to within one run at 8-7.
Vigue closed out the game with a 1-2-3 ninth inning, earning his first save of the season in the process.
