
Michigan to Conclude Regular Season at Rival Michigan State

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 25-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team (14-10, 8-4 Big Ten) concludes the 2024-25 regular season on Saturday (April 19) with a marquee matchup in East Lansing against Michigan State (14-8, 9-3 Big Ten). First serve is at noon inside the MSU Indoor Tennis Center.
Notes
• Michigan is 14-10 on the season and ranked No. 25 in this week's ITA poll. With an 8-4 Big Ten record, the Wolverines are fourth in the 14-team standings. Three players are ranked in singles: Gavin Young (No. 54), Benjamin Kittay (69), and Will Cooksey (85), while Young and Kittay are ranked 19th in doubles.
• With a 14-8 overall mark, Michigan State is just outside the top 25, sitting at No. 27. The Spartans are in third place just ahead of Michigan in the conference standings at 9-3. MSU has four ranked singles players -- Ozan Baris (12), Aristotelis Thanos (38), Matthew Forbes (92) and Max Sheldon (107). MSU has no ranked doubles teams.
• Michigan went 0-2 on its trip to Los Angeles last weekend, playing without Young and Kittay in the lineup. Its 5-0 loss against UCLA (April 11) snapped a three-match win streak that saw the Wolverines win all three by 4-0 scores.
• Michigan boasts a 109-19 record against MSU in the all-time series and has gone 27-2 since 2000, including a 23-match win streak that dates back to the 2005 season.
• Last season, the Wolverines rallied from a 3-1 deficit to beat Michigan State in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals in a five-hour match to advance to the Big Ten championship match. It came just one week after Michigan topped MSU 5-2 before a packed house at the Varsity Tennis Center that decided second place in the league.
• Bjorn Swenson is riding a six-match singles win streak. He is 12-8 in dual play with a 7-2 mark in the Big Ten, playing at Nos. 2, 3, 4 and 5 during that time frame. Swenson's career-long streak is eight matches in the fall of 2022.
• Seven players have won match clinchers for the Wolverines during the spring season. Nicholas Steiglehner leads the way with four, capturing victories against Tennessee, Harvard, Purdue and Indiana.
• Cooksey is the team leader in singles wins this season with 20. He is 20-9 overall and has a 12-6 mark in dual singles matches. Cooksey is also a part of the winningest doubles pair with Alex Cairo. They are 14-8 this season.
